LEAD:

Aug. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Merv Griffin, who worked in front of television cameras as a jovial talk-show host and behind the scenes as creator of two of the longest-running TV game shows, ``Jeopardy!'' and ``Wheel of Fortune,'' has died. He was 82.

Griffin was suffering from prostate cancer.  However, the rapid spread and major organ failure is being described as "immediate and unexpected."

Griffin ranked with Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, and David Letterman among influential TV talk hosts.

He had his own style, admired, sometimes lampooned, but never forgotten.

A true "household name," even those who never saw him on televsion new the name "Merv Griffin."

The Merv Griffin Show ran from 1962 to 1986.

As you can see from his IMDb entry, Griffin was also an actor, a producer, a writer, and a soundtrack composer.

I remember watching his show, he had everyone from Richard Pryor to John and Yoko, and he was a huge Beatles fan, and he kept Arthur Treacher around, I liked Arthur.  RIP  Merv

So sad. I used to watch his show (along with Mike Douglas, Dinah Shore, & Phil Donahue). I remember years ago that I was surprised to learn that he created both Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune. I just thought he was a talk show host. The industry along with the world has lost a truly creative talent.

This could be the end of game shows as we know them. I certainly hope they don't take Jeopardy!  off the air or anything. Of course, we'll probably have a week of reruns in Merv's honor... who knows?

Merv was a legend of both entertainment and business.  This is a loss.  :\'(

The guy was so cool, he even got to party on his yacht with Lara Spencer.  It don't get any better than that.

RIP Merv.  :)

I used to watch Merv Griffin as a youngster.  He was a TV giant and will be missed.

They had a tribute to him on Larry King Live.  Vanna White, Alex Trebek, Robert Loggia and Merv's son Tony were all there to share memories of him

Even Joan Rivers appeared, and I was shocked at how normal she looked

His name was not Merv Griffin,
His name was not Merv Griffin,
His name was not Merv Griffin,
His real name was George.
