Written By: LyricBoy on 08/10/08 at 3:35 pm

Just saw that Issac bit it today, at age of 65.

RIP "Shaft"

Was it Issac Hayes that provided the voice of the Chef in South Park?

Well that's two....

Someone on another board I go to pointed out that Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes were in an upcoming movie, along with Samuel L. Jackson.  If I were Samuel L., I'd frickin' go into hiding or something.

I'm going to go listen to some Isaac Hayes now....

Might as well get the obvious out of the way...

"OH MY GOD! They killed Chef!"
"You bastards!"

I didn't know much about Hayes before South Park. Great voice and character.

Damn! This week has not been good. First Bernie Mac and now Isaac Hayes?

After James Brown, Isaac Hayes was one of the few real soul/R&B icons left, he was crucial to music and music history.
Without Isaac we wouldn’t of had classics as Sam & Dave’s “Hold On, I’m Coming”, and other soul classics of the era. The Stax/Volt label was pretty much built on Isaac and his talent.

The impact of Shaft, his Grammy award winning soundtrack, and the rise of blaxsplotation films/music is immeasurable on today’s sound…and no matter what anyone tells me, the best version of “Walk on By” is his, hands down.

He was a pretty good actor too, if anyone gets a chance to see him as Gandolf Finch on a few old episodes of the Rockford Files, its worth a watch. And I always thought, Chief was one of South Parks greatest characters. Just realized that “Chocolate Salty Balls” actually hit #1 in the UK 1999?!? ;D

Sad to see another of our great talents go, RIP Isaac. :\'(

I just read about his passing.  Such a great talent.  That unforgettable voice.  I think I need to listen to the Shaft theme song.

RIP Issac. :\'(

I concur.  I have never been able to stomach Dionne Warwick's interpretation of it.  Dunno why.

My favourite song of his was a 1979/80 song called 'Don't Go' which I believe was his last ever US Top 40 hit

He was a great singer/musician.  R.I.P.

Wasn't it a sad enough weekend when we lost Bernie? >:(

I always liked Issac, even though I despise South Park and I hope he's not judged harshly for it, especially since he wisely walked away.
It feels like we lost another one of Rock/Funk's wise elders, following Barry White & James Brown. Maybe tonight they'll be singing in Heaven together, with Bernie as the opening act. ??? The world now just feels a little less soulful, can you dig it?

Your Pal,
Doc

Two celebrity deaths in one weekend? :\'( :\'(

This is horrible... Isaac would've been 66 if he'd lived another ten days.

I first heard about Issac's passing in Perez Hilton's feature on Switch with Nick Grimshaw (a radio programme aimed at young people that airs on Sundays from 7pm - 10pm on BBC Radio 1). The news was shocking and that's two of America's most well-known black celebrities gone in one weekend. I never actually liked 'South Park' but it was still sad to hear about the loss of Issac.

RIP Issac. :/(

Not much to add to that...

Just realized that “Chocolate Salty Balls” actually hit #1 in the UK 1999?!? ;D

Tongue-in-cheek it may have been, but remember him for the above... :-anyone of a certain age to play 'air wakka-wakka guitar' on hearing 'Shaft'...RIP big man...

It's as bad as losing Barry White, but not as bad as losing James Brown.

I was surprised by the news.  I didn't know Isaac Hayes was even ill.  Hayes was very adroit taking that "Chef" role on South Park.  A lot of guys in Hayes' generation would find even a send-up of Uncle Remus too tasteless.  Yet it wasn't until then that "Shaft" got really hip again.  He earned millions of new fans of Isaac Hayes/Shaft via South Park.
