I remember her from the Guiness Book of World Records. She held the record since 1976. Yao Defen's 7' 9" has not been verified.
If Allen didn't have that operation at the age of 22, she might have grown to over 8 feet due to that pituatory malfunction. However, the tallest human being is not a record to strive for. She was already suffering terrible complications by her early 20s. 53 is old for a person suffering with giganticism. It really plays hell on all neuromusculoskeletal systms

The tallest Guinness-verified person is still Robert Pershing Wadlow from from Alton, Illinois. He grew to just a shade under nine feet at 8' 11.1" No doubt he would have reached nine feet if an infection we could easily cure today hadn't killed him in 1940 at the age of 22.
