British screenwriter Troy Kennedy Martin, best known for penning Z-Cars and The Italian Job, has died of cancer at the age of 77.

He began his career in 1958 at the BBC, writing several plays before creating his first series, Storyboard.

In 1963 he was presented with the Writers' Guild of Great Britain award for police TV series Z-Cars.

Although he was best known for his film and TV work, Martin also wrote a novel called Beating The Damask Drum.

The book was published in 1959.

He eventually moved into feature films in the early 1970s, writing the original screenplay to The Italian Job, which starred Michael Caine.

Kelly's Heroes, The Jerusalem File and Sweeney 2 - which was based on the popular TV series The Sweeney - followed.

He also co-wrote the screenplay for Red Heat with director Walter Hill in 1988 and Red Dust, directed by Tom Hooper, in 2004.
