She was a true class act, I always enjoyed her performances, especially Stormy Weather.  I sing it like her everytime I caught out in the rain.  Unfortunately, I don't sound remotely like her (and don't have an orchestra riding in my back seat) so it's not nearly as enjoyable.

Lena had golden pipes and a classy body to go with 'em!  She was something else!

Sorry to see her go!  So long, Lena, maybe you'll sing one for me when I get up there!

So sad, such a great performer. She lived a great, long life, still hurts to see her go. A class act that set the bar for class acts.

She opened the door for so many when there were few doors even around to be opened...

From Yahoo press:
Horne, whose striking beauty and magnetic sex appeal often overshadowed her sultry voice, was remarkably candid about the underlying reason for her success.

"I was unique in that I was a kind of black that white people could accept," she once said. "I was their daydream. I had the worst kind of acceptance because it was never for how great I was or what I contributed. It was because of the way I looked."

And so contrary to that, she was known for her great talent and professionalism, as well as her being so human and real. She really did rise past her looks and past the prejudice to give us so much more.

Rest In Peace to a genuine jewel of show business.  :\'(

I remember when she did a guest spot on Sanford and Son, ol' Fred Sanford went bonkers for Lena.

RIP Lena, you did it right.  :)

She was a great talent. A class act all the way and she paved the way for so many. It is sad and she will be missed but she was 92. I am glad that she was able to live for so long.

Such a fine talent and great lady!  I always thought she was the most beautiful woman I ever saw - and she aged so well!

I can't wait for TCM to have a Lena Horne tribute (it has been soo long since I have seen one of her movies) 8)

I just read this about Lena  http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/may/10/lena-horne-profile-tributes

Things not being equal, particularly during the years when she rose to fame, she will also be remembered for her fiery pride and her refusal to kowtow to the small-mindedness of the times.

As was the case in the days of segregation, she had to perform first in front of the white US soldiers, irrespective of the fact that she herself was black.

She was only permitted to repeat her act on behalf of the African-American troops the following day, in a separate black mess hall. To her bemusement, she found them sitting behind several rows of white soldiers, and when she inquired she discovered that the front seats were occupied by German prisoners of war.

At first, she tried turning her back on the PoWs and directing her voice to the black soldiers. But when that failed, she stormed off in a rage.

And Whoopi told this story on the View on Monday.

When she first moved to Hollywood in 1941, her home had to be rented for her by a white friend. Neighbours drew up a petition to remove her from the area, until Humphrey Bogart, who lived next door, stepped in and put a stop to the protest

It is funny because I put her in the same category as Loren Becall-a CLASSY CHICK!!!! And there aren't too many of them in my book. (Actually, Whoopi is another CLASSY CHICK!!!)

There was one Sanford where Lena was referenced, then (I think) it was another episode on which Lena actually showed up.  IIRC, In one episode they trick Fred out faking sick by saying he's going to get a date with Lena, then when they open the door, of course, it's Aunt Esther snarling at him!  Then in another episode, Lena actually does show up....

I'm so torn up by this.  :\'(Haven't been this upset since Michael. I'll truly miss her. I really admired her. She was not only a positive black female role model, but a positive role model period.

And if I can look HALF that good in my 90s, life will be good!

Wow... Lena was about 54 when that episode was filmed, and she was looking fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine.  :-*

One more case of "Black don't crack"  :)

I always loved Fred Sanford's classic heart attack schtick "Weezy, I'm comin' to join ya!"  ;D

"Weezy" was The Jeffersons.

Fred's chest-clutching line was "This is the big one!  Elizabeth, I'm comin' to join ya, honey!"  And variations thereon.
Redd Foxx finally did die in 1991 of...what else? A heart attack!
:(

BTW, I didn't think to check Youtube.  Thanks for posting.

No,you're thinking of Good Times.

The guy who played the husband in Good Times was in the Sanford & Son scene with Lena Horne.  He was one of Fred's buddies who had to pay off on the bet.   ;D

Keeping your head above water
Making your way if you can
Temporary layoffs - Good Times
Easy, crazy ripoffs - Good Times
Scratchin' and survivin' - Good Times

Ain't we lucky we got 'em
