Subject: Marvin Isley dead at 56

Written By: Howard on 06/08/10 at 5:26 am

Bassist Marvin Isley, who jammed with his siblings in the Isley Brothers on such hits as "Who's That Lady" and "Fight the Power," died Monday at the age of 56.

The official cause of death wasn't immediately announced. Isley left the band in 1997 while battling diabetes and later had both of his legs amputated, the New York Daily News reports.

He was best known in the 1985 video with his brothers "Caravan of Love".

Public Enemy's version was hard core rap.  VH1 rated it as the top performance ever by a rap group.  8)

Marvin Isley was one of the forerunners of the "slap"/pop and pull-off funk style of bass playing (the the throbbing baseline in "Fight The Power" is a good example).
Bassists from Flea (the RHCP) to Bootsy Collins have imitated his style. Any good bassist who studies his craft, learns "funk/slap" bass as a standard lesson/style in playing his instrument.

A large part of "funk" music grew from his influence and we will miss him at his passing.
RIP.
