Subject: Jaggerz Drummer Jim Pugliano Goes to That great Gig in the Sky...

Written By: LyricBoy on 06/18/10 at 8:55 am

HARMONY TWP. — James Pugliano, who pounded out the beat for chart-topping rock band the Jaggerz, died Tuesday in his Harmony Township home.

Pugliano, or “Pugs” as he was known to friends, was 63.

The Picksburgh native joined the Beaver Falls-based Jaggerz in the 1960s and played drums and supplied backing vocals on the group’s 1970 sophomore album, “We Went to Different Schools Together,” featuring the single “The Rapper,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard music chart and No. 1 on other charts. “The Rapper” earned the band a spot on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand” and in the pages of music magazines.

Pugliano was also behind the drum kit for the third Jaggerz album, 1975’s “Come Again,” the last one to feature singer Donnie Iris, an Ellwood City native, who went on to a successful solo career.

One of The Jaggerz' members, Donnie Iris (real name, Donnie Ierace), was a member of three One Hit Wonder bands:

The Jaggerz - "The Rapper"
Wild Cherry - "Play Dat Funky Music"
Donnie Iris and the Cruisers - "Ah! Leah!"

These days, Donnie still does some musical appearances.  He also runs a mortgage company and he recently started selling his "King Cool" line of light beer.   8)

Wild Cherry had a few other hits but they didn't hit the charts after 1976
