Subject: Chinatown actor Joe Mantell dies aged 94

Written By: Philip Eno on 09/30/10 at 1:25 pm

Oscar-nominated actor Joe Mantell, who spoke the final line to co-star Jack Nicholson in 1974's Chinatown, has died at the age of 94 after a long illness.

Mantell died on Wednesday at the Providence Tarzana Medical Center in California, his son said.

Mantell, who also appeared on TV shows including Ironside, was nominated for the supporting actor Oscar in 1956 for his performance in Marty.

His closing line in Chinatown was: "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

In Marty, Mantell played Angie, best friend of the title character, played by Ernest Borgnine.

Mantell also spoke a much-repeated line in Marty: "Well, what do you feel like doin' tonight?"

The actor is survived by his wife, Mary, three children and two grandchildren.
