Subject: Symphony trumpeter Maurice Murphy dies

Written By: Philip Eno on 10/31/10 at 5:29 am

Maurice Murphy, the London Symphony Orchestra's former principal trumpeter, has passed away at the age of 75.

The musician retired in 2007 after playing with the LSO for 30 years.

A statement on the orchestra's website said he was "one of the best known, most admired and loved trumpeters in the world."

Composer John Williams once revealed he had written his film scores for Superman and the Indiana Jones films with Murphy in mind.

His playing can also heard on the scores for the Star Wars films, Gangs Of New York, Batman, The Dark Crystal and the Alien series.

The LSO said it was "deeply saddened" to hear of his passing.

Tributes have been left by various members of the musical community on its website.

Murphy grew up playing in brass bands in Yorkshire before joining the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic.

He was made an MBE in the 2010 New Year Honours.
