Gospel legend Jessy Dixon dies at 73

Sep 26, 2011

Jessy Dixon, who traveled the globe to popularize gospel music, has died at age 73, the Associated Press reports.

His sister Miriam said he died this morning at his Chicago home.

According to Dixon's site, he performed more concerts in the United States, Europe, Africa and India than any other gospel artist. In Norway alone he appeared 500 times.

His appearance at the 1972 Newport Jazz Festival, as the opening act for Paul Simon, introduced him to the white, pop audience and began bringing him a wider following worldwide. He then toured with Simon for the next eight years and collaborated with him on Live Rhymin' Simon and Still Crazy.

Dixon also wrote songs, penning numbers for Cher, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole, Amy Grant and others.
