TMZ says she believes she was exposed to toxic particles in New York's atmosphere in the aftermath of 9/11. If she wasn't a smoker or anything, I find that plausible, although it doesn't make me any happier about this. DS was one of the first musical stars I could recognize as a kid, and I still enjoyed her music through the 80's. This is truly heartbreaking, but Heaven has a little more 'Hot Stuff' coming onto their stage!
RIP Miss Summer, you will never be forgotten.

Your Pal,
Doc

Not sure if anyone remembers, but she already had had two Top 10 hits in The Netherlands in 1974 before her international breakthrough.

Never heard of 'em, so Holland pips everyone again!  ;)

Mind you, at that time she was based in continental Europe, so that may have had a lot to do with it...

My first memory of her was, while listening to the Top 40 rundown many years ago, I couldn't understand why the radio wouldn't play 'Love To Love You Baby'...just the title and performer was announced - nothing more!

But the enduring memorial to her will forever be 'I Feel Love'...more production than performance, but she carried it off splendidly...

One of the (if not the) first 12-inch singles I ever bought...

Heaven knows why...I think I was mesmerised by the length (oo-er!) as it clocked in at a whopping 15+ minutes!

Summer did struggle with a prescription drug addiction in the seventies and eighties.  This was publicly known and well-documented.  Cocaine was the drug of choice in the disco era, but I don't know if Summer suffered from cocaine addiction.

I know this is gonna sound weird but I never knew if Donna Summer was a little freaky or not when in her song Hot Stuff when she sang about having another woman over to please a man or when she made those orgasmic sounds in Love To Love You Baby.

After a while she stopped singing LTLYB.  As for the orgasmic sounds, I don't know if that was Donna, or if that recording used backup moaners.

Back in 1975-1976, moaning-and-groaning in pop music was big business and was part of the whole porn chic era.  I think that Andrea True's More-More-More was the first org tune.

Back then you could turn on the radio and listen to Andrea and Donna's moan-and-groan songs... later in the day you could open up your copy of the Beaver County Times, delivered to your door.  You'd see full-page ads for the latest films by Marilyn Chambers and Johnny Wadd, right across the fold from ads for the local supermarket or butcher shop.  :P  Then in the evening swing by the Dependable Drive In by the airport where there were 4 different screens playing the latest skin flicks.  All-night porno film festivals with free coffee and donuts served at dawn.

I like how Ms. Summer had stated that she was not going to get in line with other celebrities to try to stay young forever. She made it quite clear that she was not interested in going down that road.

I can state with certainty that Donna was singing about finding a man in "Hot Stuff", because of LTLYB. It is a documented industry legend that she actually laid on the studiofloor(not naked, sorry!) to record the song, and imagined herself as Marilyn Monroe, singing while in a lover's embrace, hence the Marilynesque falsetto voice in the refrain.

I think that was her, she couldn't have had backup singers for that.

But Doc was Donna Summer bi-sexual or something?  ???

But Doc was Donna Summer bi-sexual or something?  ???

From Songfacts...

"It was rumored that Summer sang her very convincing orgasmic-sounding vocals on the studio floor while simulating a sex act. The rumor was partly true - after trying to record her vocal the traditional way, her producer Giorgio Moroder had her sing on the studio floor while lying on her back with the lights out, since she didn't want the guys working on the album looking at her when she sang it. She explained that she was indeed touching herself during the vocal - she had her hand on her knee. Her boyfriend Peter served as her fantasy inspiration."

"Donna Summer had had a Christian upbringing and was an unlikely writer of such a sexual song. She told Time magazine December 1975 that to write the lyrics, "I let go long enough to show all the things I've been told since childhood to keep secret." She added in an interview with the Telegraph Magazine: "So I took on this character and eventually it just fitted me."

Donna had a hard time listening back to the song after she recorded it and was concerned about what the song did to her image, but she learned to embrace it and made it a centerpiece of her subsequent tour, putting on a stage show that Madonna would later crib from, complete with dancers simulating sexual positions and Summer squatting over an array of guys."
