Subject: Sherman Hemsley, 74

Sherman Hemsley, 74, who played George Jefferson on The Jeffersons, has died at his home in El Paso, Texas.

According to TMZ, Hemsley was discovered by his nurse who initially believed the actor he was sleeping.

As I told my friend on FB, I never liked the characters he played but I feel his loss is just another notch on the wall where I slowly measure the obliteration of my childhood.  Seems they are all dropping like flies lately.

A little part of me has died.

I really, really liked Sherman Helmsley and he was engrained in my childhood from the watching of his shows, The Jeffersons, Amen, and Wille B. Good. He was one of my favorite actors and I'm just stricken at the news of his death. It really is terrible how we're losing an entire generation of great people. It's sad.

Another part of my childhood is gone.

How sad. My parents use to watch The Jeffersons and I sort of remember him from that show.

Sounds like he's FINALLY movin' on up...

To that DEE-luxe apartment in the sky.  :)

Another legend from this series, gone too soon.  Roxie Roker, Howard Franklin Cover, Isabel "Weezy" Sanford, Mike "Lionel" Evans, Paul Benedict (the Englishman), and Zara "Mother Jefferson" Cully are all gone now.  :-\\  Zara did not even survive through the series' run.

Marla Gibbs is the only main player left.

quick correction Tom was played by Franklin Cover.

Berlinda Tolbert, Jenny Willis(-Jefferson) is still alive
Ned Wertimer, Ralph the doorman, appears to still be alive
Damon Evans, the second Lionel Jefferson,  appears to still be alive.

Ironic how the man ranked #2 on TV Land's list of Characters We Love To Hate is mourned so tearfully among the show's fans. Kiss Weezy for us, George.

For anyone curious, here is the full list.

10. Eddie Haskell, "Leave It To Beaver"
9. Newman, "Seinfeld"
8. Alexis Colby, "Dynasty"
7. J.R. Ewing, "Dallas"
6. Sue Ann Nevins, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"
5. Major Frank Burns, "M*A*S*H"
4. Larry David, "Curb Your Enthusiasm"
3. Archie Bunker, "All In The Family"
2. George Jefferson
1. Louie De Palma, "TAXI"

George was a jerk, but Sherman Helmsley always made me laugh. RIP.

Your Pal,
Doc

I still miss the Old Navy ads he did with Weezy, Morgan Fairchild, the Smothers, Jeannie, and that silly dog Magic.

This year tops 2009 in terms of saddest year of passings. Just taking a few moments glancing at the first several pages of the Celebrity Heaven forum shows how high-caliber talent this particular year is.

You mean 10 years older Sherman was 74, Isabelle died at 86.

Hey Howard,

Isabelle Sanford "Weezy" born in  Aug, 1917
Sherman Hemsley "George" born in  Feb, 1938

20 years difference.  (20 years, 5 months and a couple of days)

Just like Ester Rolle was old enough to be John Amos's mama. LOL.

RIP Deacon, I love Amen more than Jeffersons.

No he means when they were on the Jefferson's. He was 38 & she was 58

Plus...not that your logic made sense, but 86 is 12 yrs older than 74....jus sayin

Not to mock his memory, but has anyone notice the weird stuff that is popping up about him on the internet?

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2012/10/29/sherman-hemsley-still-not-buried-3-months-after-death-bizarre-legal-dispute/

"It was revealed in August that Hemsley’s body had not been buried amid a legal dispute between his former manager and self-proclaimed business partner and live-in best friend Flora Enchinton – who was named as the sole beneficiary in his will – and a Philadelphia man, Richard Thornton, who claims to be the actor’s brother. Thornton filed a civil lawsuit disputing the validity of the will, signed by Hemsley one month prior to his death."
