Subject: Thatcher's gone...

Written By: Paul on 04/08/13 at 6:56 am

...at long last, some would say!

Even though she gave up power over two decades ago, she still has a polarizing effect...

R.I.P. Margaret Thatcher

And with this passing, we have now lost all three of the most influential world leaders of the 1980's: First Ronald Reagan, then Pope John Paul II, and finally Margaret Thatcher. As we well know, most others(Khaddafi, Khomeini, Hussein, Marcos, Jong-Il...) are not even missed, let alone mourned. But these three did all in their power to leave their country and the world better than they found it, and their place in History is assured as one of honor. Who do we even have left from that time, Gorbachev?
May the Iron Lady rust in peace(I hope she would laugh at that).

Doc

How come when Hugo Chavez died a month ago, you used the thread as a way to express your political views about Obama. But yet when Max expresses his views on Margaret Thatcher, you give him a fudge saying, "Not cool"? How come you seem to think it is cool to express your views on Obama when the thread wasn't even about him but Max can't express his views on what the thread IS about? And Max didn't say anything nasty (unlike you did) and why is that "not cool?"

Apparently Ol Maggie didn't have many fans:  The classic "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" has been a popular download in the UK, and next week, most likely will be in the Official UK Top 100 chart

Thatcher set the sadistic tone of modern conservatism.  Blame the oppressed for their lot in life and make mean-spiritedness a virtue. On the other hand, Thatcher had no problem taxing the oil companies in the North Sea at 90%, which no American politician would dare to even think!

Chavez was an anti-American socialist pig, while Thatcher was a patriot who sided with us Americans against the most dangerous enemy the Western World has ever known. That is all the reason I need. No offense to you or Max, Cat, but I am an American, I believe in liberty, and unlike the un-American coward we are suffering under now, I will NEVER apologize for that!

That's cool and all, people were just suggesting that merely posting something disagreeable doesn't warrant a smite. I thought Max was being pretty damn charitable. (More charitable than I was for Chavez, to be sure.)

(I also saw some guy named Dukakis who tried riding in a tank lookin' all badass, and Dukakis, you're no Thatcher.)

I was a fan of Thatcher. On foreign policy, it's not so much that she stood up to the Soviets, she also realized that in Gorbachev there was someone the West could work with.  That gave Reagan the political cover he needed to make the moves towards detente that led not only to the end of the Cold War, but to the dissolution of the Soviet Union.  On the domestic front, she kept the lights on (literally, work stoppages were breaking the reliability of the electrical grid), and in breaking the unions, rebooted a failing economy.

But my fandom is necessarily tempered by the fact that in breaking those unions, her actions resulted in widespread human suffering throughout the UK.  It's hard to give a damn about the commies when you're out of work.  I was unaffected by that, so, yay me.  That doesn't change the fact that those who hated her and everything she stood for, do so for good reason.

http://www.thepoke.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/thatcher_funeral_alternatives.jpg

To that end, and because those who opposed her made some awesome music, here are eleven (!) anti-Thatcher tracks guaranteed bring back memories both fond and painful of the 80s music scene.  Everyone who was anyone is in there, from Morrissey, Elvis Costello, the Speicals, Madness, Billy Bragg, NMA, and aaw, c'mon, no disrespect to NMA, but this list sucks, where the hell is The Exploited?

The Exploited is too obvious.  Let's go for something a little more obscure.

So it is ok for you to state your opinion but not ok for Max to? And I am not even going to say anything about your comment which I could say A LOT about.

Would appear that way, but when you consider that a handful of downloads equals a chart entry these days, it's not exactly the voice of majority!

There's been more controversy on how the BBC have reacted to it - in the end, they decided to play a short excerpt on the chart rundown (rather pointless, as the track itself is barely a minute long!) Here's how they announced it...

The song will probably sink like a stone come this weekend...

What's the difference between Margaret Thatcher and Michael Jackson?

Margaret Thatcher didn't like miners.

There's another version of that joke with an altogether darker meaning, which I can't post here...

The worst Thatcher joke I've seen so far;

When I realised Margaret Thatcher was dead, I did a double fist pump and shouted, "F__king brilliant!"

Everyone around me was disgusted, and looking back, I suppose it was out of order.

Especially as I was the first paramedic at the scene

Why didn't we think of this in 1979?
