Subject: Acoustic Pioneer Amar Bose Dead at 83

Legendary acoustics scientist and entrepreneur Amar Bose, whose various sound-related inventions were ahead of their time, has passed away before his time.

His ultra-cool products include the Bose 901 speaker systems, the Spatial Control Receiver, the Bose Acoustic Wave radio, and active noise-cancelling headphones just to name a few.  8)

Good riddance. Worst speakers ever. Hands down. Bar none. (Trust me, I know.  :\'( 8-P)

I'm still hoping and praying for Bowers & WIlkins or Klipsch speakers (and an awesome audiophile receiver) to replace the garbage CineMate II and Wave we own.

Edit to add: Here's a fearlessly negative obituary of the man that I highly recommend all audio ignoramuses read before wasting their time or money:

Bose was the "worst speaker you ever owned" yet you made TWO purchases? ???

Although I have to say, I never had the desire to own a CineMate II, and I was once given a Wave radio and put it up on eBay.

If I had a couple extra shekels laying around, I'd love to have a Bose Acoustic Wave unit on my office desk though.  8)

The author of that article must not be much of an audiophile or a mathematician.  He says:

...one could argue that the surface area of nine 5" drivers adds up to 45 inches....

Actually one cannot argue that.  Nine, 5-inch speakers add up to a 15" speaker.  ;D

BLASHPHEMY!!!  :o ;D I'm not the one who made those purchases  :-\\; my grandparents (the usual decision-makers in the house, whom I live with) told me they would be getting a Bose; I damn near had a stroke or heart attack (not literally!) just thinking about such a horrific fate. I printed out probably a magazine's worth of webpages damning the idea and explaining, objectively, why they'd have to kill me to get a Bose in any house of mine. They shrugged it off, and went somewhere for several hours.

Then I got a call saying, "Don't get mad. We bought a Bose."

They did all this behind my back. "Et tu Brute?"

I even wrote my Christmas list that year in October... all to narrow down my options. I went into Tolkienesque detail about what I wanted and my requirements, took up about a whole page -- What receiver I wanted, speakers, speaker wire gauge, etc. And my efforts didn't pay off AT ALL... I got a 720p HDTV for my bedroom instead. (!!)

Then I figured, my birthday is only 34 days after Christmas. Nope.

I still haven't let up. In January, inspired by the SOPA/PIPA blackout, I decided to protest Bose by blacking it out, listening to the speakers built into the TV rather than the cheap too-big-to-be-tweeters-too-small-to-be-woofers made out of PAPER (!!) (as opposed to diamond, titanium, Kevlar, or Klipsch's own horns) and enclosed in plastic (!!), which resonates like crazy (as opposed to wood). Good speakers should never resonate; any audiophile will tell you that. And good speakers should also not whimp out at 46Hz on the "low" end and 13kHz on the "high" end; there should never be a frequency gap of 80Hz in between the speakers and bass module (not subwoofer).

About the TV speakers, yes they are crummy, but they are (if only marginally) better than Bose.

I reminded them about my sneering contempt for Bose and requested that they please replace it whenever we had the money to do so. They promised me I'd help pick something better. Not too long after, they bought a Bose Wave, because they hated having to have the TV on to listen to a CD, and because it seems the only brands they know are Bose and any electronics company making mass market speakers. Well, that's what you get for not following my sage advice. That's what happens when the sound comes from the TV to the speakers. A receiver would be able to bypass the TV.

So no, I didn't make either purchase.

This blackout still stands. I put the same dream team on my Christmas list yet again, but to no avail. Ditto my birthday. They did tell me they have no idea where to get it or how much it costs or anything like that. They even asked me if the speakers I wanted were wireless.

I told them the lowest they could stoop are Bose and/or wireless.

Here in repose,
Lies Amar Bose,
His gear now shows
No highs, no lows.

Burma Shave.
