Subject: RIP Lame Arby's Logo

Written By: LyricBoy on 03/16/14 at 7:54 am

Don't know how I missed this a couple months ago, but Arby's Restaurants decided to 86 their ill-designed and poorly-received logo from late 2012.  Here's a pic that shows the logo from early 2012, the disastrous one, and the most recent one that does a decent job of preserving the "heritage".

Amazingly while the (now defunct) logo was in effect, Arby's built new stores that did not have the cowboy hat image.

I do wonder if Arby's will survive though.  Their brand image has been all over the place and it is a mess.  They're keeping the dumb "slicing up freshness" ad, they still have that repulsive Bo Dietl hawking their product, and this comes after a series of branding moves like "Good Mood Food", "I'm thinking Arby's" and "Oven Mitt" to name a few.  They need to spend some time to develop a solid program and stick with it.

Personally my favorite Arbys ad was this one for their chicken cordon bleu sammich:

Interesting that you consider it lame, I worked at Arby's from 93-07 when I had my stroke and probably would still be there and I never really gave the logo a second thought. All fast food places change their marketing strategies to keep up to what the consumer wants whether it's eating healthy, big burgers with bacon or getting the kids to want the kids meal with the best toy.

I never noticed the logo WAS a hat. LOL.  ::)

I've only eaten from there once, hated the sammie and never went back.

Here's a pic of the original hat logo.  8)  Later versions are a more 'stylized' rendering of a cowboy hat.

My point is that the logo was lame.  (The food is OK)  Apparently Arby's management agreed because it barely lasted a year.

Changing a company logo is something that you rarely do because it is so closely linked to the brand.  Plus it is expensive.  You're not just changing an avatar on a web site.  Signage, advertising, business cards, food wrappers, you-name-it all has to be changed and that is very expensive.  Stylistically the failed logo was a mess.  They tried to get cute with the apostrophe supposing to be a meat slicer ("slicing up freshness") but it never caught on.

My problem with the "Good Mood Food" campaign is that it was overly cheesy and not well produced.  Between that campaign and the Bo Dietl ads, somebody at Arby's apparently has decided to run their ads with unattractive, somewhat repulsive spokespeople.

Of course Arby's does not have a monopoly on bad campaigns.  I remember McDonald's "I'd Hit it" ad campaign.  ;D

Why would they do that to their logo?

I don't even know where the nearest Arby's is around here.  Subway is wiping them out.  There are three Subways in Amherst alone!

I prefer Arby's.  There are some around here.  I love their roast beef and curly fries.

I won't do Subway.  I asked for an Italian sub there, got a baloney sandwich on a giant hot dog roll.  The local mom & pop joints are much better.

That's because you got young kids who are only newbies there. They probably don't hear you correctly. ::)
