Written By: Philip Eno on 06/11/14 at 11:28 am

Joan Lorring, who received an Oscar nomination for her role in The Corn is Green opposite Bette Davis, died Friday in the New York City suburb of Sleepy Hollow, The Associated Press reports. She was 88.

Lorring was born in Hong Kong and moved to San Francisco in 1939 to escape the Japanese invasion. She started her career in radio and soon moved on to the stage and screen. Her first film was MGM’s 1944 production Song of Russia.

In 1946 she was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for the role of Bessie Watty in The Corn is Green. That year she also appeared alongside Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre in Three Strangers and The Verdict.

On Broadway, she won the Donaldson Award in 1950 for her work in Come Back, Little Sheba.
