Subject: Austrian Singer Udo Jürgens (80) Passes Away

Written By: Henk on 12/22/14 at 12:14 am

Austrian singer, songwriter and actor Udo Jürgens passed away rather unexpectedly last Sunday. He died after becoming unwell during a walk in the surroundings of Gottlieben, Switzerland.

Jürgens may not be a household name for most of you, but he wrote over 800 songs. With his 1966 composition "Merci Chérie" (lyrics by Thomas Hörbiger) he won the Eurovision Song Contest, and several of his tunes have been used by Matt Monro, who wrote English lyrics to them, most noticeably "Walk Away" (originally "Warum nur, Warum").
The Jürgens composition "Illusionen" became "If I Never Sing Another Song" (1977), which was later performed by Shirley Bassey, Sammy Davis, Jr., and other entertainers.
