(RNN) - Grammy Award-winning singer Joe Cocker died Monday after a battle with lung cancer, according to a representative.

He was 70 years old. ITV first reported his death, citing a member of his management team.

The singer was known for his raspy voice and jarring movements as he sang. He broke through with his blues take on The Beatles' song With A Little Help From My Friends, which he performed at Woodstock in 1969. The song later regained popularity as the theme for the TV show The Wonder Years.

Other hits included his take on You Are So Beautiful and Up Where We Belong, his award-winning duet with Jennifer Warnes.

I liked Joe Cocker's music, what a voice he had. I remember he sang "The Letter" and the duet with Jennifer Warnes "Up Where We Belong". :\'(

Oh no.  Such a phenomenal musician.  :\'(

There aren't very many people who could take a great song and make it even greater, e.g., his cover of "The Letter" from The Box Tops.

Oh no. :\'( I just heard about this yesterday, on the radio. One station played his recording of "The Letter" after announcing that he'd just passed on. Btw, I've always liked his version of Traffic's "Feelin' Alright."

R.I.P. to a talented rock-n-roll performer. :\'(

I am saddened by his death, he was part of an era of music that even though before my time, I grew up listening to and influencing who I am today.

my favourite songs are With a little help from my friends (that song always reminds me of the intro to the Wonder years) and Delta Lady is another favourite of mine.

RIP Joe Cocker.
below is the youtube link to both songs:

Feelin' alright - uh-oh.
(I'm not feelin' too good myself after that wisecrack.  RIP, Joe.  Thanks for the music.)
