Subject: Toto bass-player Mike Porcaro dies at 59

Written By: Philip Eno on 03/16/15 at 5:14 am

Mike Porcaro, bass-player of US rock band Toto which had hits with Africa and Rosanna, has died at 59 after a long battle with Motor neurone disease.

Toto keyboardist Steve Porcaro said in a statement that his brother had died peacefully in his sleep at home, surrounded by family.

Toto, which broke up in 2008, reformed in 2010 to raise money for Porcaro and raise awareness of his illness.

Also known for the hit Hold the Line, the band sold 35m albums.

Toto guitarist Steve Lukather wrote on Facebook that Mike was "now at peace".

Motor neurone disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a rare condition which attacks the nervous system.

As the condition progresses sufferers find basic activities such as walking, speaking and breathing increasingly difficult.

This is really sad. :(

One of the other Porcaro brothers in the band also passed away, albeit more than 20 years ago, I think.

They had several great songs.

The Los Angeles county coroner had a different opinion.

Yes.

Jeff Porcaro (drummer, d. 1992), Mike Porcaro (bass player, d. 2015), and Steve Porcaro (keyboardist/songwriter, still alive).

Sorry.  It was a insecticide that he was using.

Death

Porcaro died on August 5, 1992 at the age of 38. The rock star fell ill after spraying insecticide in the yard of his Hidden Hills home and died that evening at Humana Hospital-West Hills. According to one Los Angeles Times report, The Los Angeles County Coroner's office listed the cause of death to be a heart attack from atherosclerosis induced by cocaine use, not from an allergic reaction to the pesticides as presumed immediately after his death and stated by Toto in the band's official history.
