Subject: UK band Viola Beach 'killed in Swedish car crash'

Written By: Philip Eno on 02/14/16 at 4:56 am

Five British nationals have died in a car crash in Sweden, the Foreign Office has said.

It is understood members of the indie band Viola Beach were killed in the accident, which happened on Saturday in the Swedish capital Stockholm.

The car plunged more than 25m (82ft) from a highway bridge into a canal, the police say.

The Foreign Office said it was in contact with the local authorities and supporting the families of the victims.

The Warrington-based band members were Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin.

They were due to play a gig in Guildford in Surrey on Saturday, and were part of the line-up for Swedish music festival Where is the Music? on Friday.

The four-piece released their debut single Swings & Waterslides last year and had featured on BBC Introducing, which showcases up-and-coming music artists.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media for the band.

CBC has been reporting that all morning.  It's unfortunate that this happened.  I'm listening to them right now and they sounded pretty good.

So sad... they were on the verge of breaking through!  Life is not fair.

I don't know much about them but this really sad. They were at the start of their career.

With the whole group gone, there's no way to re-form the band.  :-\\

Hopefully it won't take too long to find out how and why this happened to them?

One of the sad parts of this is that their music might just become hits now.  This is usually the case when singers and band members pass away.

- Songs from 'Thriller' re-charted in 2009 after the death of Michael Jackson
- David Bowie's record sales soared after his death
- The 1995 Greatest Hits CD 'Solo Collection' by Glenn Frey never made the Billboard Charts until just recently after his passing
- The 2003 CD 'The Very Best of Cilla Black' rose to #1 in the UK chart after her death in 2015

Viola Beach are on course to enter the top 10 in the singles chart this week, following the death of all four of their members, and their manager Craig Tarry, in Sweden at the weekend.

There's nothing like death to breathe new life into an act. The ultimate irony.

It did the same thing for Nirvana.  Nevermind top the Billboard rock charts and stayed there for what? Five years or something like that and Kurt had been dead for at least that long.

A police spokeswoman (in Sweden) said that, for the moment, they would not release any information on who was driving.  "We can confirm that the very preliminary post-mortem results show that the driver of the car had no trace of alcohol or drugs in the blood." She added more tests would be carried out in the coming weeks.

Their song 'Swings and Waterslides' made it to #11 in the UK chart.  It is true what they say:  Your records will sell better after you die.  Sad, but true :(

A permanent memorial is being planned for Warrington band Viola Beach, who died with their manager in a car crash. Kris Leonard, River Reeves, and Jack Dakin - all aged 20 - Tomas Lowe, 27, and their manager Craig Tarry, 33, died outside Stockholm on 13 February. Warrington Council is raising funds for a lasting memorial in the town.  Mayor Geoff Settle said he hopes families and friends can "seek solace" through a tribute to "five young men who were set to take on the world".
