Subject: Screenwriter and actor Barbara Turner dies

Written By: Philip Eno on 04/06/16 at 12:25 pm

Screenwriter and actor Barbara Turner, who penned the 2000 biopic Pollock, has died at the age of 79.

Turner, the mother of actor Jennifer Jason Leigh, was nominated for a Writers' Guild of America award for Petulia, a 1968 film starring Julie Christie.

She was born in New York City and married twice, to actor Vic Morrow and Iranian-born film director Reza Badiyi.

After acting in a number of plays and television series in the 1950s and 60s, she took up screenwriting.

In a 1995 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Leigh spoke of her mother's influence on her acting work, saying she had grown up "reading her scripts and getting my value off of what a good script was from them".

Actor Marcia Gay Harden, who won an Oscar for her role in Pollock, tweeted that Turner had been a "lovely, smart, kind lady".
