Subject: Prince, singer and superstar, dies at 57 at Paisley Park

Written By: Philip Eno on 04/21/16 at 12:28 pm

The hugely popular and acclaimed musician Prince has died at his home in Minnesota at the age of 57, his publicist has said.

Police were called to a medical emergency at his Paisley Park estate earlier on Thursday, US media reported. An investigation is underway.

Prince became a global superstar in the 1980s, with albums such as 1999, Purple Rain and Sign O' the Times.

He sold more than 100 million records during his career.

Prince.org crashed for this. The first song I thought of was "I Would Die 4 U." That leaves Madonna left out of all the 1980s superstars, and maybe this means we could listen to his music again on YouTube.

Still, RIP Prince.

One thing I liked about Prince is that his lyrics were not suggestive, they were direct. He did not beat around the bush. His lyrics were like "Hey baby, I wanna do you". The cover of his "Dirty Mind" album? A bed spring and mattress.  ;D

I imagine he and his protege Vanity are reminiscing on that big purple stage in the sky.

Oh God, that's terrible news! I was just listening to "My Name Is Prince" this morning before I read this.

As much as Prince was an odd guy and apparently opposed LGBT rights, he was still one of the most talented and creative musicians of the past several decades. Frankly, I prefer his work over that of Michael Jackson. Purple Rain is one of my favorite albums of all time, and Sign 'O' the Times and Parade are not far behind. Even well beyond his heyday, Prince still had a passion for making music, releasing new albums on a constant basis all the way until death, so it's hard to imagine what might have come had he survived longer.

Good night, sweet Prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest! :\'(

Add to that Lemmy, Scott Weiland, Natalie Cole, David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Glenn Frey, Rob Ford, Patty Duke, Chyna, and Victoria Wood! It's ironic, because 2015 as a whole was not really the biggest year for shocking celebrity passages, but then around December, the tragedies started rolling in like an avalanche, and it's been that way ever since!  :o

I felt like many celebrities that I like are dying since 2011. It wasn't sad for me until Steve Jobs died. After that, everybody I knew like Maurice Sendak and James Gandolfini died horribly. It was even worse, since that's when I was going through my preteen years. They sucked (especially 2012), since that's when I found life depressing for me.

"Pussy Control" probably couldn't.  Which is a shame because it had a pretty serious and laudable message.

"Peach" could probably air now in a way that it couldn't back then.  Hell, it's what Prince would have sounded like if he'd covered ZZ Top.

I'd link to both, but Prince never really understood the internet.  I can't help but sympathize; his position on the internet arose indirectly from the fact that he understood the exploitative practices of the record labels exceptionally well.

His rabid attitude towards copyright diminished his fans' ability to share his work with others.

The internet's attitude towards copyright means that his fans are merely inconvenienced, and not prevented from doing so.

But today, we are all diminished.

My favorite Prince tune is "When You Were Mine", it is a catch and timeless pop song that captured his persona.

My favorite Prince moment is when his crew played a game of basketball against Charlie Murphy and pals. Prince's team mopped up the court with Charlie's guys. Ever magnanimous, Prince served up pancakes for all after the game.  8)

It's been hard to process that he is gone. His death has in many ways been more shocking than the passing of MJ and Whitney, as both of those deaths were indeed shocking but not entirely surprising. I never imagined Prince would leave us so early, but there is some small comfort that he avoided the Year 27 Curse that claimed his ultimate idol Jimi Hendrix all of those years ago. At least we had 30 extra years to appreciate him.

Here was what Prince said at his last public appearance, just a few days before his death. "Wait a few days before you waste any prayers." That's very creepy.  I read that fans suggested he predicted his death years ago with two of his songs.  "Sometimes It Snows In April": It snowed a few days before his death in April in Minnesota. "Let's Go Crazy": "And if the elevator tries to bring you down, go crazy, punch a higher number". He died in an elevator. I'm guessing, "A higher number" refers to Heaven.  Not necessarily what he was referring to but what the fans are. Myself being psychic, I find all this very interesting.

Sales of Prince's music have skyrocketed since his death last Thursday, at the age of 57. The Very Best of Prince and Purple Rain hold the number one and two spot respectively in the US Billboard chart. The chart is compiled on a Friday, meaning Prince outsold the rest of the market in just 24 hours. In the UK, two of his albums also entered the Top 40 on Friday. Some of the sales were spurred by the lack of Prince material on streaming services.

Some people loom larger than life. Prince, MJ, David & Whitney, and of course, Madonna, who thankfully is still very much with us. For some, there's so much talent and energy bursting within them that their light gets extinguished too early, they burn too fast, too bright. This world cannot keep them contained, so they jettison away, joining lights in the constellations. This is where I view Prince now, along with Michael and David and Whitney, and the countless other beautiful souls we've lost...too early, too soon...over the decades. We mourn, we remember and we say a prayer, and are thankful for the time we had them here on this Earth.

US music fans have bought almost 655,000 Prince albums in the four days since the star died, according to measurement firm BuzzAngle Music. At about $10 (£6.86) a pop, that would equate to $6.5m (£4.46m)  The 3m individual tracks have have also been sold at about $1 each brought in another $3m, according to BuzzAngle, bringing the total to $9.5m (£6.5m). Prince kept his music off Spotify and very little can be found on YouTube, but it's all available to stream on Tidal (which has no free tier, unlike Spotify).

I know if anyone wants his physical CDs they have to wait a little while. There are only a few CDs sold in stores these days. Record stores are a rarety. So online is the place. Perhaps they're on his website, I haven't checked it out in a long time. But the best online sites for CDs are Discogs and EBay. I don't get why people brag about Amazon. I've heard so many bad things. But when people get on to get physical CD's, which is what Prince would have really wanted, the sales will be twice as high, if not more.

I'm iffy on this. We don't know if he would want all this out. Maybe it's old work he wanted to keep for himself. I do really want to hear it all but it might be disrespectful. Unless in his will to release. I'm having really mixed feelings here. But sometimes I wonder if post death releases are not for the fans but for the money.  :-\\

First we had Elvis as the King Of Rock & Roll, then MJ as the King Of Pop. 2Pac was in my personal opinion the King Of Rap. To me The Purple One is more than a Prince but the King Of Funk & Soul. Some might argue that that title belonged to James Brown, but I beg to differ. Look at how much of an influence Mr. Nelson had on music! He was more than an artist, as was Michael, who was a great writer & producer as well. But to me Prince's legacy is a bit stronger. Yes I liked MJ and I'm a fan of his baby sister, Janet, but I was always much more into Prince than Michael. And Prince did so much more in his time.

I've heard people comparing Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Prince on this board and others.  For my money, Prince would be the most talented all-around performer.

MJ sold more records, of course, and he certainly had a broad appeal to a wide audience.  And his dancing was second to none.  But Prince was far more a musician than MJ, being able to play dozens of instruments and at a very high level of capability.  On his early albums, he wrote the songs, sang all the vocals, played all the instruments, and ran the recording studio.

Whitney Houston had a great voice, but I don't think her appeal was anywhere near that of MJ or Prince.  And again on the point of musicianship, I have to say that Prince was far superior.

Finally, Prince did not spend his life with sordid stories in the tabloids.  Given his fame he managed to keep his private life fairly private, and you did not hear stories of him in all sorts of seedy situations.  Although I suspect that, unfortunately, we're soon going to hear about personal drug problems.  If that's the case at least he kept it out of the headlines.  :-\\

So overall I see Prince as my favorite of the three, with MJ next and Whitney a very distant third.

Members of Prince's former band The Revolution have announced they will reunite for a series of concerts. The announcement was made in a video on band member Brown Mark's Facebook account. "We have decided, after spending three or four days together now grieving over the loss of Prince, that we would like to come out and do some shows," guitarist Wendy Melvoin said. "We want to let you know that we'll be there soon." The band look set to tour the line-up that existed when the ensemble broke up in 1986, one that consisted of Mark, Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, Bobby Z and Matt Fink.

Normally there is no fee to place an eBay item for sale (usually the first 50 items you place are free as far as the "listing" goes).

However they do take a commission which is a percentage of the action, if indeed your item sells.

Check out this link. http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html

And from what I gather, she got all kinds of credit for her hit that Prince made. I hate how people don't give the writers and producers their credit due.

Detectives in Minnesota have questioned a doctor who saw the singer Prince twice in the weeks before he died. A police warrant has also revealed that Dr Michael Schulenberg prescribed medication to the singer on 20 April - the day before he died. It does not say what was prescribed or whether Prince took the drugs. The police also conducted another search of the star's Minneapolis home and seized medical records from the hospital where Dr Schulenberg worked. Prescription painkillers were in the singer's possession following his sudden death, officials have told US media. But it is unclear what role, if any, those drugs may have played.

Would be nice if Paul Simon were to do a reworked version of his classic song, "Graceland".  8)

Hold on to your head baby, that 500 dollars is just the general admission for "VIP" access it's 1000! I know because I had it out with a friend about this. She got sore when I said only an idiot would pay that much for a Prince even that Prince wouldn't even be at and they're already begun the squeeze to get as much money out of him as humanly possible. It's been almost 24 hours and we haven't spoken since. LOL. I guess I was perhaps too truthful?
(for 200 dollars I could go to a 3T concert, a soundcheck, a meet and greet and eat lunch with them!)  ::)

I wish the son he and Mayte had, had lived. I would have rather seen the money go to his child than to a pile of hangers-on.
