Director Michael Cimino has died. Little is known about him, but he was believed to be 77.

Cimino will forever be remembered for two films:

1978's The Deer Hunter. One of the first Hollywood films about Vietnam, it won Oscars for Best Director (Cimino), Best Picture, Editing, Sound, and Best Supporting Actor (Christopher Walken). It was also nominated for Best Actor (Robert De Niro), Actress (Meryl Streep), Screenplay, and Cinematography.

And...

1980's Heaven's Gate. A film that flopped so disastrously that it killed a) United Artists, b) Cimino's career, and c) The 70s New Hollywood era as a whole. As with Blade Runner, there are several cuts of Heaven's Gate, far exceeding two hours. The film has been re-evaluated to death, with either positive or negative evaluation.
