Just saw in the news that Leon Russell passed away last night in his sleep.

Leon was awesome, with his influence spread across all sorts of music genres.

The camera work isn't too impressive but it's Leon in full voice:

Leon's body of work as a song writer matched by few musicians.  Amongst his classic songs that he WROTE:

"Superstar", performed by Karen Carpenter, as well as Delaney & Bonnie, Rita Coolidge, and Luther Vandross

"Song for You", performed by Leon Russell and pretty much everybody else including Amy Winehouse

"Masquerade", performed by Leon Russell, George Benson, and The Carpenters

"Tightrope", performed by Leon Russell

Early in his career he played piano with The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean. When he released his first solo album, his backing musicians included John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison.

He did session work with Frank Sinatra, Tina Turner, and Bob Dylan. A few years ago he did a huge album with Elton John who idolized Mr. Russell.

In the early days, Elton John OPENED for Leon Russell.

He played piano on Badfinger's signature tune, "Day After Day".

He even helped The Gap Band get their start.

Not bad for an old Oklahoma boy.  8)

He was scheduled to perform in Honolulu a couple of years ago.  I wanted to see him, but the concert was canceled at the last minute.  :(
