Youguang Zhou, the Chinese linguist, sinologist, and supercentenarian, often credited as the "father of (Hanyu) Pinyin", the official romanization for Mandarin in the People's Republic of China, died today at the age of 111.

The age of his death at 111 brings to mind the lyrics of "Waltz For Eva And Che" from Evita.

Having lived through 111 years of Chinese history, including the Mao era, for Zhou to have survived all this upheaval for so long, must mean that he indeed was a cunning linguist.
