Subject: Marty Balin (Jefferson Airplane)

Cause of death is unknown. He was 76.

Born Martyn Jerel Buchwald, Balin was a struggling folk guitarist on the San Francisco scene when he formed a band with Paul Kantner after meeting the 12-string guitarist at a hootenanny. They met up with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, bassist Jack Casady, drummer Slip Spence and singer Signe Toly Anderson and cut their 1966 debut LP Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. They developed a strong following around the budding San Francisco rock scene, but became nationwide superstars in 1967 when Anderson left the group and was replaced by Grace Slick.

I'm devastated by this. Marty (and his bandmate the late Paul Kantner) were true heroes to my musical generation, back when music drove the culture. I saw them live many times. I even spoke to him on a few occasions. Very cool guy. Absolutely wonderful singer and songwriter. A true "San Francisco hippie" in the best sense of the word.    :\'(    :\'(    :\'(

He built this city on rock and roll.

That wasn't Marty. He had left the band years before that song. So had Paul. That's Mickey Thomas. People unfortunately confuse the two entities sometimes.

The cause was 'complications' during cardiac surgery. Apparently Marty was right:
Hearts can break, and never mend together, hearts can be that way.
Vaya Con Dios, Marty. You and your music will be missed.

Your Pal,
Doc

Marty Balin had a delightful, distinctive voice, unlike any other:

I feel the need to post this classic Jefferson Airplane performance:

"St. Charles" features Marty on lead vocal but really unleashes the chorale power of Jefferson Starship. Listen to this mystical tale. It was often one of their live show standouts.

Glad I could turn you onto it. It's one of the most classic of Marty tracks. One I always considered a companion piece, and another acknowledged Marty classic is "Today". In fact they are back to back on the album. This song is the very essence of 1967, yet at the same time it's absolutely timeless.

No "deep cut" by any stretch - but I have to say a word about this gem.  As an older kid (9-ish), Jefferson Airplane was already a legend and a household word - frequently referenced on the news or the TV or some other public venue.  I was too young at that time to follow acts closely but I knew who they were, as did seemingly everybody.  By the time I was near-eleven and started listening to music on my own, Jefferson Airplane had apparently fizzled out or broken up or something - no new hits.  But I still remembered their name.  A few years elapsed and I got into high school.  As a H.S. Junior, all of a sudden this incredible, beautiful new love song burst onto the airwaves, and we were all mesmerized (we meaning my siblings, peers and me).  The buzz was even greater when we learned this new masterpiece was by none other than that legend, Jefferson Airplane - now renamed Jefferson Starship.  We celebrated their comeback in a big way, and this comeback event was all the buzz in the fall of '75.  Here is that romantic gem:
