One of the first guitarists to push the limits of the instrument and its amplification. His heavy reverb and tremolo picking defined the surf rock sound. He essentially invented the subgenre, with such tunes as "Miserlou," "Ghost Riders in the Sky" and "Let's Go Trippin'."
"Miserlou" is best known today for its use in Pulp Fiction.
He was 81.
