Subject: Bye Bye, Black Sheep... Robert Conrad Gone at 84

Written By: LyricBoy on 02/08/20 at 5:02 pm

Legendary tough-guy actor Robert Conrad , who played Secret Service Agent James West in The Wild Wild West, and who played obstreperous Army Air Corps pilot Pappy Boyington in Bah Bah Black Sheep, has passed away at the age of 84.  :\'(

Adding to Conrad’s cachet was that he was a childhood chum of both Mickey and Tony “the Ant” Spilotro, whose assassination in an Indiana cornfield was immortalized in the movie Casino.  :o

Back in the 70s, both Robert and William Conrad were regular staples on network TV.  Although William actually was a military pilot in WW2.  8)

He was so yummy. I loved The Wild, Wild West. I also liked Black Sheep Squadron.

I remember the batteries commercials where he would put it on his shoulder and say, "I dare ya."

I also remember this exchange with Lou Ferrigno on Battle of the Network Stars.

I have to admit, I could just never get into "Wild Wild West". The whole premise just didn't gel for me. My father loved it though.

WWW is one of those shows where nearly the entire cast died. Robert Conrad was the last of the major characters to pass away; only a few guys who played bit roles are left.  :-\\

I was always hoping for a reunion show.

Here’s a link to a pretty good interview with Mr. Conrad.

Sadly, most of the casts of all those mid-century shows are gone now. Keep in mind, many of them were middle aged (or getting there) even then. And it's 50 years later now. I prefer not to have reunion shows anyway. The Dick van Dyke show reunion in 2004, for example, was really not very good at all. Even if it did have the great Carl Reiner once again at the helm. Sometimes you just can't recapture the old magic. Better to leave these shows in their glorious mid century past.

What I don't mind is if surviving cast members get together to talk about the show, tell behind the scenes stories and show old clips. M*A*S*H did a couple of those.

I could see a DVD reunion show. Dick is still on the top side of the grass, as are Carl Reiner and the kid who played Robbie. The premise could be a reboot of The Alan Brady Show, and DVD is hired to supervise a new crew of writers, which includes his son.  8)

I definitely agree about having reunion shows in this day and age, It's impossible to create that spark again when most of the old age actors and actresses can't do it anymore, They're either up there in age or most likely have passed away, In Hollywood there is very limited actors in their 90's and 100's today.

The premise of the 2004 reunion was that Alan Brady (Reiner) wanted the remaining Alan Brady Show writers (Morey Amsterdam was already dead, Rose Marie was not yet) to write his obituary! Already they were off on the wrong foot and the results were not great.

When I think of him I think of the show High Mountain Rangers. A bunch of the Conrad clan.
