It is said that the reason the "Spearchucker" character was dropped after the first season of M*A*S*H is that, although there were African-American surgeons in the US army in the time frame that M*A*S*H takes place, there was no evidence that there were any in Korea or specifically in M*A*S*H units. Remember, those were very different times.

One would think that the “Spearchucker” character was removed because the name would be considered extremely offensive to black people.  >:(

Keep in mind this was a reality of the 1951-1953 era in which M*A*S*H took place. In the original novel, as well as the movie, he is said to have this nickname because of his javelin throwing prowess in college, and no overt racial bias is shown towards the character, whom everyone seems to like. But obviously, the racial connotation is there. I feel there is no need to "whitwash" things (no pun intended). If that was the reality of the time then show it.

The series itself had at least two episodes (not featuring the "Spearchucker" character) that took on racism head on.

Yep. Lately M*A*S*H cast members are dropping as precipitously as Hogan’s Heroes cast members did.  :-\\
