Subject: Happy Days Are Over for Gavan O’Hurlihy

Written By: LyricBoy on 11/10/21 at 7:24 pm

Notable actor Gavan O’Hurlihy, who made his bones playing Chuck Cunningham in the early stages of the TV series Happy Days, has bit it at the age of 70.  :\'(

In addition to Happy Days, he also played the main villain in Death Wish 3. In that flick, Charles Bronson snuffed him by blowing him to smithereens with a grenade launcher.  8)

Here’s a hilarious story about how Gavan got the role of Chuck in Happy Days.  ;D

Gavan only stuck around for a half-season and he asked off the show. He was then replaced for a few episodes by some other dude, but eventually his character was written out of the show as if Chuck had never existed.

This gave rise to the acting term of “being Chuck Cunninghamed” which refers to a character not only being written out of a production, but also wiped from all memory.  ;D

That "Chuck Cunningham" situation was actually pretty common in mid-Century TV, far before the advent of "Happy Days".  For example, "The Lucy Show" did it in the mid-60s when it abruptly changed format. The "Lucy" character moved from the East Coast to California and her two children were tidily disposed of. One "went to college", the other "went to military school" and they were promptly never mentioned again. "My Three Sons" had a similar situation when the oldest son Steve suddenly "got married" and was never heard from again, being replaced by the more familiar Barry Livingston as "Ernie".  Of course, "My Three Sons" also replaced the William Frawley "Bub" character with William Demarest's "Uncle Charlie" but that wasn't the same thing. Demarest had to be brought in because of Frawley's failing health.

TV shows in those days, even our beloved M*A*S*H,  did not place a lot of emphasis on consistency. When I was much younger this used to confuse me a little. As I got older it annoyed me a bit. Now, in the big picture, I kind of enjoy the inconsistencies. Especially since I now understand them.

Aw, Chuck, why wasnt there another spinoff of Happy Days named "The Chuck Cunningham Show".
He and Elvis live in Kyrgystan as Buddhist monks, temple run by Amelia Earhart. They solve mysteries and help equip the Sherpas  :D

You heard of Island of the Lost Luggage-where it appears there is an Island of the Lost Characters.

Chuck Cunningham went to the same island where Bobby Martin from All My Children went. Bobby went up into the attic to wax his skis and was never seen again. They did claim that he was away at summer camp-FOR OVER A DECADE!
