Subject: Last Mechanical Bull Ride for Aaron Latham

Written By: LyricBoy on 07/28/22 at 7:30 pm

Screenwriter Aaron Latham, who rose to fame with his screenplay of the legendary nouveau-cowboy movie Urban Cowboy, has taken his last ride in the bull at the age of 78.  :\'(

Latham wrote an Esquire story in 1978 as “The Ballad of the Urban Cowboy: America’s Search for True Grit.” Mr. Latham delivered a vervy narrative — straight from the school of New Journalism — of petrochemical workers who traded their hard hats for cowboy hats and mounted a bucking mechanical bull, clinging not only to the beast but also to what Mr. Latham described as a vanishing “cowboy code.” This inspired the making of urban Cowboy, with Aaron providing the screenplay.

As a result, the Cowboy Life became all the rage, with people flocking to Gilley’s Honky Tonk in Pasadena TX, showing off the best of their bull riding, square dancing, and drinking skills. It was a glorious time.  8)
