Subject: Vin Scully turns off the microphone

Written By: nally on 08/02/22 at 10:44 pm

Vin Scully, a sports announcer who had a long-running career, mostly as the voice of the Dodgers franchise, has passed away. He was 94. :\'(

He began broadcasting games for the Dodgers in 1950, when the team was in Brooklyn, and continued to do so as they moved out west to Los Angeles. He continued calling games until 2016, when he retired from doing so, after 67 seasons behind the microphone.

He was a truly great man, and will be greatly missed. :\'(

R.I.P. Vin Scully

Indeed he was. Lots of people, including myself, enjoyed listening to him call Dodger games.

There were also a number of occasions in which he called games that didn't involve the Dodgers. For example, if he helped call a nationally televised game. (Case in point, the 1986 World Series. He made quite a notable call when the Mets rallied in Game Six.) In 1988 he was one of the TV announcers for that year's World Series, which involved the Dodgers. His call of Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit walkoff home run was quite memorable too, and I remember hearing (and seeing) it when it was live.

Not as of yet... but it could be natural causes. No one knows for sure yet.

Yesterday, the Dodgers played their first home game since the passing of Vin Scully; before the start of the game, a special tribute was held in his honor. It culminated with manager Dave Roberts asking all the fans in attendance to utter, in unison, Vin’s five-word phrase that he would always start his broadcasts with: “It’s time for Dodgers baseball!”
Dodgers went on to win their game, 8-1.
