Subject: Dame Mary Quant: Fashion designer dies aged 93

Written By: Philip Eno on 04/13/23 at 7:49 am

Fashion designer Dame Mary Quant has died aged 93, her family has announced.

A statement from her family to the PA news agency said she "died peacefully at home in Surrey, UK this morning".

Dame Mary was credited with designing the mini-skirts that helped define the Swinging 60s.

Her family said she was "one of the most internationally recognised fashion designers of the 20th Century and an outstanding innovator".

"She opened her first shop Bazaar in the Kings Road in 1955 and her far-sighted and creative talents quickly established a unique contribution to British fashion."

"Jean-Paul Belmondo and-a Mary Quant got
Stoned to say the least
Ginsberg, he ended up-a dry and so
He a-took a trip out East
If I'm a-late waitin' down the gate, it's such a 'raz' scene
A groovy place to live
In the Portobella I met a fella with a cane umbrella
Who must've used a sieve
So come loon soon down Cromwell Road, man
You got to spread your wings
A-flip out, skip out, trip-out and a-make your stand, folks
To dig me as I sing
Come take a walk in sunny South Kensington
Any day of the week
Come see the girl with the silk Chinese blouse on
You know she ain't no freak"

A new song for me, quoting locations of London I know very well. Btw, it is Portobello, for Donovan had it as Portobella to rhyme with fella.

It's from the 1966 "Mellow Yellow" album and also the 'B' side of the famed ""Mellow Yellow" single. Donovan uses the "Portabella" pronunciation on several songs, even those without need for a rhyme. I always assumed it was the vernacular way some people pronounce it, like some people say "winda" for "window" or "piana" for "piano". Even "pilla" for "pillow".

In King's Road, Chelsea, London, there is a plaque honouring the original site of fashion designer Mary Quant’s ground-breaking boutique Bazaar.

All is sunny in Donovan's world. He also has a song called "Sunny Goodge Street", one of my favorites of his. About Goodge Street tube station.

This is actually one of Donovan's more covered songs. Judy Collins has done it, as well as Canadian singer Tom Northcott.
