Subject: What was your favorite elementary school cafeteria food?

Written By: ultraviolet52 on 09/15/05 at 1:25 am

I know there is a common hatred for cateteria food, but sometimes I get cravings for some of the things I used to eat! Strange. Does anyone have a favorite cafeteria food they used to eat?

We never had school lunches, but I swear the food they dish out at universites are just as bad as the crud that would be served at a school cafeteria. For double the cost as well...  :P

Gosh that's so long ago, I'm lucky to remember what I ate yesterday.

I *think* we used to get Salisbury Steaks, (that probably explains why I like the t.v. dinners today.)

I remember eating lots of chunks of cheese in high school.  I swear I have mouse genes in me.

Also remember eating tacos in high school.  Yummy, but not as good as a real Mexican restaurant.

very rarely ate school dinners and didn't at all at primary school.  I usually went home for lunch.  If I had a club (recorder lessons for example) then I would bring my own sandwiches in.  You had to pay for meals weekly so you couldn't buy in for just one day.

Tuna sandwiches and potato chips(crisps) on Friday was always a big deal.  My mother always packed our lunches, but sometimes she let us buy the friday tuna.  For some reason it was a hit with all the kids.  I remember a kid once invited a few of us to his house and he said his sister was gonna make tuna sandwiches "just like the ones in school because she worked in the cafeteria and knew how"  That set it, we all went.  Oh yes, and we always put the chips(crisps) in the sandwich, I've heard that that is not common everywhere.

Well, I guess it's my turn -
Early Elementary - kindergarten-4th grade -(1986-1992) I went to a Private school, and they didn't have a cafeteria during the time I attended. But, they would treat us every once in awhile for some nachos or order out pizzas for us, or even a bunch of burgers at the local hamburger stand.

Late Elementary - 5th-6th grade (1992-1994) - I changed to a public school and was introduced to "real" cafeteria food. It was actually very good!  They served us either water, juice, milk or choc. milk and they had a daily menu for us. There were several items I couldn't wait to eat a second time..

Junior high (1994-1996) These were also good foods, too. They had a salad bar, pre-made sandwiches, chilled drinks, and also a pizza hut stand outside. They had some great french fries!

Elementary- Chicken. Our school makes great chicken.. used to be my favorite.

Middle School- Still Chicken, But I'm digging the Grilled Cheese a lot more.

High School- Grilled Cheese, and the salads are superb.

Well, I pretty much avoided the school cafeteria in Elementary school on regular lunch days - alot of it grossed me out! But as others have pointed out, I tended to like more "snack-ish" foods, like salads, pizza, nachos, etc.

Things started to improve around high school, though.

It reminded me of a recipe I have in a children's cookery book for sugar toast.

Toast one side of bread then butter the plain side and sprinkle it liberally with sugar.  Pop it back under the grill until the sugar melts and browns slightly.  Then eat it.  It tasted delicious but is probably not something a dentist would recommend

Whenever I order a hamburger from Burger King or Carls Jr, I always ask them to hold the pickles. If they disobey and I see pickles anyway, I just pick 'em off and throw 'em away. It's that simple.

For the life of me, I cannot remember anything that I would call a 'favourite' (or, for that matter, nutritious) whilst in Primary...

...but I do vividly remember the mashed spud with added 'stringy bits and lumps' and also a vile custard which was meant to be strawberry flavoured, but looked (and tasted) like someone had just thrown a pink felt-tip into the mixture!

By the time I hit Secondary, I got wise and took my own lunch in - despite the fact that my Ma was doing the dinners there at the time!

The two elementary-junior high schools I went to had excellent food. I always considered the near universal hatred of cafeteria food to be amusing. Wish I could have went to one of the schools that fed kids garbage for awhile just so I could have experienced it.

Chicken Fried Steak: Ever ate at Grandy's? Was similar quality

Turkey noodles and mashed potatoes: Even my grandma couldn't make it as good as they did

Yeast rolls: DELICIOUS!

Submarine sandwiches: They were a bit dry but the quality of the meat made up for it.

Pepperoni pizza: Whoever made this should have opened up a chain of pizza parlors.

Cinnamon Rolls: These were so good that some kids would offer to buy your roll for a dollar.

Hamburgers: Excellent except the buns were toasted for too long making the outer part of the bun hard. I used to tear that part off and devour the rest.

Strawberry Shortcake: 20+ years later I still haven't ate any that rivaled theirs.

Tuna Pita Pockets: My mom got to try one of these when going on one of our field trips. Couple months later when it was on the menu, asked me to wrap mine up in a paper towel and bring it home so she could eat it when she got home from work.

Spaghetti- Way too saucy but the sauce was restaurant quality. When my school would have its annual "Spaghetti Feed" charity dinner, there were literally lines down both streets. My school took advantage of knowing people loved it by charging six bucks a plate, which was a lot in the mid 80s.

Not everything was amazing. Their pinto beans were bland and the trash cans would be full of that crap. Crazy how they never removed it from the menu. The corn dogs were average at best and were probably the ones you buy in the store. While the cooks made award winning pepperoni pizza, their peppers and cheese pizza was horrific. Their fried chicken was decent but was usually overcooked. I didn't like their hot dogs either.

Our cafeteria food was just terrible. The foods we looked forward to (once a month) was miniute steak with fries, or macaroni with a sauce that tasted like spaghetti sauce with too much of a tomato taste. As the head/leader of our table of 8 at school, it proved so difficult to encourage the little ones to eat the food (?) they served. Oh the trials I remember!
2 of the kids (grades 1 and 2) always cried when I served them the food (?) which the cafetieria workers created.

The napkins and tissues ( I gave them to stop crying) had better nutritional value, and better taste than the actual food.  ;D

I hated the school lunches in both elementary and Jr. High, I packed every day. My H.S. didn't offer much for lunches since it was a small private school but every day they had a selection of fresh bagles and soup.

My kindergarten had the BEST crackers, we would get one and a small carton of milk.  The crackers were savory but just slightly sweet.

When I was in Kindergarden to second grade I would bring my own food in a small lunchbox. After that I only had food from the cafeteria. Some of the food was horrible but not all of it. The worst I think were the chicken patties, we would always find small bones or something in them then we called them pattie's bones lol. It was disgusting. Then when I went to Jr high the food got better too.

In elementary school I think my favorites were the desserts, like the brownies they were really good.

French fries and eggs but then grades 1 through 8 I was in a Catholic School so I went home for lunch every day. It wasn't until
High School that we had cafeteria food. It was a Vocational & Technical school so the food was prepared by the students, needless
to say I didn't indulge much. They made a really good Spanish rice dish but other than that I had 4 packs of Handi Snacks cheese
and crackers and 3 Vanilla ice cream cones. Unless I took my own lunch, then it was bologna & cheese.

My kids will all say their "favorite elementary school cafeteria food" was "fun lunch" because their "cafeteria food" doesn't exist on the elementary school level. ;D Every other week, the PTO brings in food from various places around the community and parents can "order" their kids lunch (you order for the entire semester at the beginning), but other than that, it's "brown bag" or nothing (although milk is available for purchse daily). No "hot lunch" until Middle School.

Wow!  That's cool.

My kid's school serves breakfast and lunch every day, even on days we have early dismissal (they rush to get all grades to lunch) because we have many kids who are a free or reduced meal program and sadly these kids might not eat if they didn't eat at school.

Grade K-5 I went to a Waldorf School.  No cafeteria.  Typical lunch packed for Maxwell:

PB & J on wheat
GORP (granola oatmeal raisins peanuts)
8 oz cartoon of yogurt
10 oz bottle of apple juice or OJ (thermos of cider when it was in season)
Cookies (Tollhouse or storebought, wolfed down before a classmate could ask me for one)
Fresh fruit sometimes (preferred oranges or apples; bananas got weird in the lunch bag)
Carrot sticks and/or celery sticks (casually discarded)

The earthy-crunchy Rudolf Steiner people forbade candy and soda pop on school premises, but we sneaked them in anyway!

Favorite public school hot lunch items grades 6 -8:

Chicken cutlet, pizza, tater tots, Jello, burgers, dogs, roast beef sandwiches, meatloaf, baked beans, chili.  But...

I gotta say it was all pretty rank and in high school I submitted it was not even worth the 75 cents.  I either brown-bagged something from home or just John Bendered it, to coin a phrase!

"You always got these very lumpy mashed potatoes on steak night, and for dessert you got Brown Betty,
which nobody ate, except maybe the kids in the lower school that didn't know any better – and guys like Ackley that ate everything."

I went to 5 different schools before I went to high school, my schools in kindergarten 1st grade did not have cafeterias.  Sometimes we would eat on long folding tables in the hallway, and in 1st grade, we'd eat at our desks in the classroom that we stayed in all day.  I brought my lunch in cool lunchboxes.  I think in Kindergarten that we only went half a day, so that we didn't really get lunch.  Might have had milk and cookies or something.  Been awhile (37ish years) so it's all a bit fuzzy now.

To be honest, I disliked most the food served to me in the school cafeteria. I can't really remember what I ate in elementary school, but I can remember high school.

I mainly ate pizza, chicken nuggets, rolls, tater tots, french fries, turkey sandwiches, and ham sandwiches. Sometimes, on rare occasions, I might get salad, but it was usually on days I didn't feel like waiting in a long line. The hamburger line was probably the most popular at my school, but I thought the burgers sucked so I never got them. My senior year I basically ate nothing but pizza. Healthy, eh?

Your High School menu was basically the same as mine but the hamburgers in my school were just awful. In our high school there was a time we could go out on lunch breaks and buy our own food. Then, by the time I was in my third year they didn't allow it anymore.

The hamburgers in my school tasted terrible too. I swore they were made of soy products rather than real meat. I don't know how other students ate that processed junk. Yuck!

Anyway, I took journalism classes in high school and we had a nifty press pass that allowed us to leave campus during school hours to sell advertisements. We had the class not lunch before long period and normally went and ate at McDonald's or Wendy's after going to a few places. I loved that class so much. It saved me from the cafeteria food.

I attended a school, and it had a cafeteria. Hamburgers every other week. Potato salad once every two weeks. The rest of the food was not edible. The mashed potatoes and the fried beans with bacon still provide me with awful memories. I can still smell them.  :(

I don't remember what we had for desert in elementary school. Jell-o? Pudding cups? 3 week old fruit?

My elementary schools didn't have cafeterias,  I used to go home for lunch usually. Now my high school we had a cafeteria and I ate there and the food was all horrible. Their French fries were the worst French fries I ever ate,  the "chicken"  nuggets didn't taste anything remotely like chicken. I can't say I miss school cafeteria lunches at all.

We had to eat everything on our plate, otherwise we'd go on report. I attended a strict school, yeh.  :-[
Once we left elementary school, we had the option of bringing lunch from home, and we did.

That I did. A strict private school run by Catholic priests. Confession every week. Catechism classes. Glad I'm out of there.

I definitely would have dislike going there. :[

Not only am I not religious, but there is no way I would be able to stand abiding by such strict rules.

Confession once a week?
:o

Nowadays they're happy if you go once a year at Lent!

My dad went to Catholic boarding school in the fifties.  Benedictine monks.  Heavy duty old school business.  He's happy to talk Aquinas and Augustine for hours on end, but you couldn't drag him to Mass with a team of Clydesdales!

I really was a pretty good child. I had to invent things when I attended confession (probably explains my vivid imagination now) , 4 times a month is too much! They really expected 7-year-old to attend confession with a priest every week, and expect the young boy to come up with (what he thought) was sin?  :-\\

Regarding Augustine, I actually read his confessions at some point. Now there was a man close to God.
We were provided with more spiritual food there than real food.  :-[

went to many different schools, one of them served these fantastic cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Great big rolls, dripping with icing and warm because they were fresh made.  :)

Tasty Kakes and iced tea.  Tasty Kakes are kind of the local version of Hostess.

The cafeteria food in Eugene, Pendleton & Portland (where I've lived) universally sucked.

However each place had something decent as a side dish: in Eugene, there were cups of peach chunks, apple rings or diced pears that were served semi-frozen for some reason. In Pendleton, we had frybread with all of our lunches due to our proximity to the Umatilla reservation. And in Portland, we got Hostess fruit pies with lunch on Fridays or the days before long weekends.

When I was a kid there wasn't any variety.  My podunk elementary school had hot lunch toted up from Milford with this lunch lady to dish it out who had a baritone voice and 24" arms  To quote Robert Klein, they give her a net so her hair won't get in the food; she has arms like an ape, but she's got no net on them!  Lunch was 75 cents and you couldn't pay more if he wanted!
