I thought I was the only one. I will usually take a sip of Carlos' beer (if he has one) and that is usually enough for me. Beer is just too heavy for me-and of course Carlos loves the dark and heavy ones-as he calls them, "Meal in a glass".

No, no, thats Milwaukee's BEAST, to those familiar with the brew of champions! ;D

Lets not get started on the bad beer we've all had the amazingly poor judgement to drink, the thread would extend forever...theres that time me and my dorm buddies were broke and scratched up 2.98 for three bottles of King Cobra, uggh, thats a bad memory. Still can't get the taste of that stuff out of my mouth to this day! :P

Stella
Hoegaarden
Leffe
Kronenbourg
Brasserie à Vapeur
Greene King - IPA
Everards Triple Gold
Niksicko
Bitburger

.. and many others.

There are only four American beers I will even touch.

Sam Adams generally make a decent enough beer.
Schlafly's are a good local brew.
Miller Lite.. is acceptable.. as a refreshing beverage on a hot day.
.. and finally.. and you're all gonna laugh, I don't actually mind the cheapest of the cheap - Stag!
;D Simply because it's about $5.00 for a 12 pack and although it's not good.. it's not actually that bad.

A Canadian IPA?  Who brews it, and what's its name?  Next time I'm up in the Great White North, I want some!

I'm a big fan of Unibroue's Belgian/Abbey-style beers (Maudite, Fin du Monde, Trois Pistoles), but I'm also a huge fan of the US West Coast's overhopped IPA style.  (Currently drinking a Pizza Port Wipeout IPA, have a few Stone seasonal releases aging in the cellar, and just picked up some Lagunitas Undercover Shutdown "Investigation" Ale, the 2007 series of which was just released a few weeks ago.)

Life is too short to drink bad beer.  Support your local craft brewery.

My choice of beer depends on the situation at hand I guess. For a  hot summer day you don't want something too heavy or full-bodied, the Hoegarden and Erdinger Weissbier (wheat) will do nicely. Well even a Miller works  ;D

As a meal companion, I prefer IPA's like the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or a Belgian Trappist beer. I really do find the current trend of micro breweries constantly showing up extremely interesting, as they do push the big breweries into making more interesting products. Experimenting with ingredients such as herbs and different kinds of malt is the key here!
I've tried brewing my own beer on a few occasions. So far I've done an Indian Pale Ale and A Weissbier. It really is worth the effort as the final result is head and shoulders above the stuff usually sold in stores (if you get it right that is).

I like most (british) beers I reckon as long as they're not too heavy.  Some of the real ale stuff is a bit too much.
Hoegaarden and some other wheat beers are nice too.

No, but sometimes the stories of drinking bad beer are just as good as drinking ANY beer.

Even bad beer drinking stories can bring back good memories...

Although I don't dare drink the stuff nowadays, I can still grin about the days past as I walk by it at the neighborhood store.

Gotta say I've mixed feelings here ... glad to see an Australian beer is  mentioned here. However, I drink/have drunk a hell of a lot of VB, Carlton, 'New' & so on. These are the 'bog standard' beers you will find at a lot of clubs and pubs. No question, that at 5% alcohol, they are reasonably potent. Cold (very), I have no problem  ... but once they get to room temperature, I find them revolting / an effort to drink. Australia is certainly capable of turning out world class beers, but personally, I do not consider VB to be up there, although it is a refreshing easy enough to drink lager type beer. I like a more heavy/ hopsy / fuller in the mouth/ European flavour.

I've lived in the USA, and tried many of the beers there. Used to like 'Strohs' 'Coors' 'Budweiser' 'Michelob' ... etc; but mostly found them lacking in intense flavour. Liked the 'malt beers' though (Micky's??) ...

Found the Canadian beers were much more to my liking though ... stuff like 'Molsons'; 'Moosehead' 'LaBatts (??)'

I've drunk hundreds of different beers in my time from around the world, wanting to find out what I might be missing/ what's 'my poison' ...

From the posts so far, would have to say I'm most in agreement with 'loki 13'

I would say I regard Belgium as having the best beers in the world. Possibly Chimay Blue is that No.1 .... and it is strong ... around 8% or 9% ... getting on for a wine in potency. Yes, I like the Carlsberg Elephant, and Grolsch. But those Belgian Trappist monks .... they  sure are hard to beat!

Belgium does indeed make the best beers, followed close behind by Holland and Germany, France trundles in just after followed by England and Australia.

In the U.S Lager isn't generally regarded for it's taste but more for it's chill factor, I've never understood this, If I want a very cold beverage I'll pay 50 cents for a dr. pepper rather than $2 for a beer.

I guess that's my point regarding the VB and so on. Those other beers (Carlton, New) .. once chilled, there's very little difference taste wise ... so people must be drinking that in preference to dr.pepper/ coke etc; to get drunk/sociable, etc;

Unfortunately, a lot of the clubs here have just those, and another called 'Reschs' as their standard offerings on tap. I find the run of the mill  rather unexciting. The better establishments might have beers like 'Stella Artois' 'Cascade Premium' 'Little Creatures' (a good 'boutique' Australian beer) 'St. Arnou' (as before) ... but otherwise, if not on tap, you often have to pay through the nose to drink something out of a bottle .... if it's even available ....

Just a matter of preferance, I'll often drink bitter in the winter, obviously you don't want it at exactly warm temperature, but you don't want it real cold either.

Lagnuitas' Kill Ugly Radio, brewed in honor of the 40th anniversary of Frank Zappa's "Kill Ugly Radio" album.

You have about a month to find some, then it's gone until next year.  The Lagunitas Brewing Company has an arrangement with the Zappa Estate.  Once a year, they get to brew a beer in honor of a Zappa album, and reproduce the cover art on the bottle.  The two beers released thus far (2006's "Freak Out" and this year's "Kill Ugly Radio") have been excellent.

I'm not sure what they're gonna do when it comes to "T*bleep*ies and Beer", but I'm looking forward to finding out.

Sorry to disappoint Jason ... but most people I know over here regard that (Foster's) as crap!

A couple of good Aussie beers I like ... and I'm talking a bit more up market here .... are 'Southwarks'; 'Boags' 'St. Arnou'; 'Little Creatures' ... and a few others that have slipped my mind. Cascade's ok too.

The likes of 'VB'; Carlton draught; New; ... which are the most widely available on tap beers here in NSW ... taste awful at room temperature, acceptable but ordinary cold ... and to me ... taste little different enough from each other to worry which one I order.

If you haven't tried Chimay blue ... you've definitely missed out to date.

P.S. You Canadians can certainly brew some top beers .... as I know from past experience. As a whole .. quality wise ... a notch up or two from the average U.S. beer ... in my opinion.

P.S. You Canadians can certainly brew some top beers .... as I know from past experience. As a whole .. quality wise ... a notch up or two from the average U.S. beer ... in my opinion.
Fosters is always last on my order sheet for a drink.

While I will still say that my favorite is Boddington's (stated in an earlier post), I just thought I would throw this out there......
Do any of the rest of you remember drinking this "beer"?

http://beerbasics.blog.com/Miller+Clear+Beer/

The first (and only) time I ever had this beverage was at a Minnesota Timberwolves game. In the Target Center (the 'Wolves home arena) there was a Sportsbar called "Naismith's" and I went down there at halftime to have a beer and a couple of cigs (a no-no indoors in MN) and they were doing a free tasting promotion. It was too weird to describe. It tasted "beer-like", but 5 minutes later the taste was gone from your breath/mouth. Sure, I had plenty that evening (it was free), but I definitely wasn't buying it.

For me, depends on the Country.

Let me see what I come up with, here:

-England: Newcastle Brown Ale, Boddington's

-Jamaica: Red Stripe Lager

-Mexico: Negro Medelo, Bohemia Ale

-Canada: Molson

-Bahamas: Kalik

-Japan/China/Orient: Kirin-Uchiban, Sapporo

-Australia: Foster's

-Ireland: Guinness

Any recommendations?

'Foster's' ? (ugh!). Well ... YOU might like it. Hmm. To be honest ... I haven't tasted one in years. However ... seem to recall it was fairly 'ordinary' within the scheme of 'Aussie' beers. You'd probably be better off trying a 'St. Arnou' / 'Little Creatures'. They are both 'boutique' beers .... only found on 'tap' in the more up market pubs .... but.... Australia can turn out top beers when they want to...

Otherwise .... they tend to be light almost tasteless lagers ... that need a lot of cooling ..  that are 5%  alcohol (strong) .... but .... revolting at room temperature .... unlike British ales ... which are meant to be consumed at room temp. ........

For casual drinking, regular ole Bud (I know, I get bad points for that)...Other times its Sammy (Sam Adams). For the times I can find it J D's Honey Brown. Gordon Biersh Honey Blonde is nice too, when you can find it on tap.

One of my favorites is Molsens "Special Dry". Truly the nectar of the gods.  Not even sure they make it anymore, haven't had one since '91.
I've only found it in Detroit, I'm assuming it was some kind of local thing as Molsen is Canadian and Windsor is just over the bridge...

One of life's true pleasures is a Half and Half, or Black and Tan (depending on where your drinking it). Guinness and Harps, problem is, out here on the west coast few bartenders know what the hell they're doing to make a proper one.  :(

Forgot about this thread.

Stone Brewing's Double Bastard is available for the next month or so.

Just finished tasting a Double Bastard against the original Arrogant Bastard, and topping it off with an Oaked Arrogant Bastard.

Don't try to drink the whole trifecta in a single sitting. (A glance at the ABV percentages and bottle sizes reveals that any attempt will entail at least 8 beers' worth of alcohol). Either invite some friends over, or use what you can't drink in that giant pot of chili you spent all day Sunday cooking.  Better yet, do both.

Stone's website has a pretty good listing of their state-by-state distributors.  You should be able to find Arrogant Bastard pretty easily.  Oaked Arrogant Bastard used to be a seasonal release, but is now produced year-round.  All three are similar in taste (the Double is thick and syrupy, the Oaked is a little more woody, and I use the regular Bastard as my benchmark American Strong Ale), and all are worth drinking.

If you're anywhere on the west coast, you should be able to find 'em.  If you're into hops and on the west coast, I'd also recommend the IPAs from Lagunitas (Northern California) and Port Brewing (Southern California).  If you're closer to the midwest, look into Dogfish Head's 60-, 90-, and 120-minute IPAs.

I don't drink beer often because I have become picky about what I drink, and my (putrid) budget doesn't allow for frequent sensual indulgences of the pricier kind.  :\'(

About a year ago I really got turned on to porters.  So I'm glad winter is back.  I'll splurge for the New Year celebration, I do believe, with some Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald.  :)

We have an awesome shop in town called "101 Bottles."  I've heard it's rated one of the best beer/wine shops in NE Ohio.  Full line of many local, regional, and national micros, and they sell many singles, so it's been fun to experiment!  :)

If there's one thing that'll revive our long-dormant beer thread, it's gotta be this:

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/46806000/jpg/_46806619_brewdog_penguin_466282.jpg

Tactical Nuclear Penguin is an ice-distilled beer, and tips the scales at 32% alcohol by volume.

Sam Adams' Utopias, at ~25%, is still the highest ABV for beer that's made only by yeast -- which excludes beers that resort to trickery like ice-distillation -- but if you're willing to permit trickery, BrewDog's Penguin takes the crown.  I've tasted the Utopian brew (very much a barley-wine-like sipping experience, but worth doing at least once in your life) and while I'll likely never taste the Penguin, I have to give it credit for having the better name of the two.

It's kinda funny, although Davey doesn't post here much anymore I've gotta mention that once when we were hanging out in St. Louis he turned me on to Schlafly. They only sell it within a 300-mile radius of STL but KC is well inside that range so I'll pick some up from time to time.

Also, I've been starting to drink the new Schlitz and I like it. For people under 50, Schlitz has always had a reputation for being a cheap schwag beer and not without good reason. Up until the early 70s, Schlitz was as popular as Budweiser and even outsold it occasionally. But then they got bought out and the new owners wanted to speed up the brewing process and in doing so, completely ruined the taste of the beer and the sales of Schlitz plummeted.

A couple years back Pabst, who owns the Schlitz brand, decided to track down the old brewmasters and had them recreate the formula of the beer when it was at the height of its popularity, and now they have "Classic 60's Formula" Schlitz. (They've also had a cool retro marketing campaign to go along with it.) It's only been brought out in a few select markets but as luck would have it, KC just happens to be one of them. (Apparently they're gonna roll it out nationwide in the next few years.) And now it's my beer of choice whenever possible.

They even brought back the Tall Boy!  ;)

He charged me $750 and gave me one of these.

The folks who brought you Tactical Nuclear Penguin (and when the Penguin was bested by a German brewer, they mentioned the war with "Sink the Bismarck!") have finally reached The End of History.  55% alcohol by volume.  Fifty-five percent.

What we may be witnessing is not just the end of the hoppiness war, or the passing of a particular period of brewing history, but the end of zymurgy as such... That is, the end point of the brewer's marketing evolution and the universalization of British slapstick comedy as the final form of beermaking.

(Francis Fukuyama would be... well, the jury's still out on proud or amused, but at 110 proof, he'd definitely be drunk.)

Spaten.  I only drink beer once in awhile, and I can't drink it very fast... so I prefer Spaten because it still tastes good when it's not ice cold... so I don't feel rushed to down it.

Heineken and Coors are ok ice cold but if I'm out in the sun, it will get warm before I can even drink half.

There was another one I used to drink, it was in a green can... I think it was called Rainier or something, I haven't seen it in years...

A group of my old co-workers used to drink one called Wicked Ale.  I tried it and didn't care for it, but they all swore by it.  No idea if that's still around either... it may have been regional.

So this friend of mine was telling me a couple weeks back how this new kid (who was about 21) at his job was raving about this new imported German beer he'd just tried called "Homm's," and how not only was it really good but also really cheap as well.

"Does it come in a blue-and-white can?" my friend asked.

"Yeah, that's it!," replied the kid.

"It's called Hamm's, dumbass!" my friend retorted, and he told me that for the rest of the day everyone at his work was breaking the kid's balls about it.  ;D
