Subject: Battle of the potato salads

Written By: Barefoot_Blues on 07/03/07 at 5:48 pm

O.k guys, lets post our recipes and see the differences in salads. I'm always curious to see what others add in theirs. Plus I might even try it out to see how I like it.

Here's mine for starters:

Red potatos ( quartered, and boiled with skins on)
mayo
mustard
pickle juice ( just a teaspoon)
pickles
green onions
boiled eggs
pepper ( tons)
salt
red bell pepper
paprika ( sprinkled on top)

I LOVE this idea.  this is a very serious issue in my family. my recipe is the one that is most true to my grandma's GREAT salad.  my mom is the WORST potato salad chef EVER.
when the family cooks out, several bowls show up.

my salad:

any potatoes....also with skins on.
mayo mixed with a little milk
mustard
relish
white onions, diced
boiled eggs
salt
paprika- sometimes.
celery finely chopped
sometimes some red beans

Red potatoes are the best but any potatoes will do-with skins
Mayo (HAS to be Hellman's)
Boiled eggs
celery
onion
bacon
parsley (fresh is better but dried will do)
paprika

Take out the red bell peppers, and that sounds fabulous. Adding the pickle juice is a nice touch. My aunt(the big potato salad maker of the family) always used relish.

I bet you can make some kick ass deviled eggs. :D

This is kind of funny to me, because my mom's from the south and she's always made note of the different between north or "white"  ::) peoples potato salad and south or "real" potato salad.

From what I've seen her version is not that different from others already posted here:

Peeled and diced potato
chopped boiled eggs
chopped onion
chopped celery
mayonnaise (Hellman's always (Best Foots west of the Rockies))
mustard (just a bit0
sweet pickle relish
celery seed (too much if you ask me)
paprika, salt and pepper to taste.
green pepper chopped (but only a very little bit)

My mom always had an issue with the "picnic" potato salad that some sold and made, the ones that are just potatoes and mayo mixed together, no taste and no style. :P

Hmm well it depends, sometimes I chop a couple of frankfurters up in it or sometimes gherkins, got to be the sour sweet ones or sometimes boiled egg and sometimes all three.
I find the trick is to add some Heinz salad cream rather than just mayo or failing that a little lemon juice for a bit of tang.

Potato's ( The good kind  :P )
Mayo ( Best is the only kind to use out here)
Mustard ( not too much , but enough to give it a tang and color)
Pickle Spears ( Zesty Garlic flavored for me)
Pickle juice
Boiled eggs
Green Onions
Celery ( but there are times I omit this, because I don't like it to much)
Paprika
Pomentos (sp)
Salt & Pepper

The times I omit the celery , I add red bell pepper in it. It gives it a nice flavor and they aren't hot. It's more a sweet taste.
