Subject: Campbell's Soup

Written By: Brigitte on 09/23/07 at 3:02 pm

This stuff has been around since 1897 and were all still enjoying it! What's your favorite out of all of them? (condensed only - no chunky or Campbell's Select)

Vegetable Beef is my favorite.  I use cream of chicken soup as a gravy over mashed potatoes - just add about a half a can of milk.  It's my husband's favorite served with chicken.  I also use Beef Broth and consomme in a lot of cooking, like when I'm making a pot roast or something like that.

To eat as soup...I love Vegetable beef, also Broccoli and cheese.  On rare occasions I will buy Chicken and stars (just because it's fun.)

I make lots of recipes (well a few anyways) using Cream of chicken or Cream of Mushroom.

We tried some kind of Campbell's Wonton soup in the red and white cans, but it was horrible.  So much for experimenting.

So it said on the news last night Campbells has been bought out and the new company are going to change the label design! I couldn't help wondering if it was a cynical marketing ploy and they will 'go back' to the old style label after public outcry therefore raising their sales by all the publicity..............

Yes, I heard this...didn't Mars try something like this not long ago, but had to revert back to how it was?

I've never really gotten on with Campbells, but at the first sign of a cold, I'm putting away the Heinz Cream Of Chicken (pepper and a good dash of Worcester Sauce optional) like nobody's business...

I use the cream of chicken and cream of mushroom as a base for a sauce.

I spotted lots of flavours you can't buy in the UK that I might try.  I think the cheese soup ones sound nice and I spotted Italian wedding soup which I think someone here (Erin - in a different thread) said was their favourite so I might try that.

There is a non-vegetarian vegetable?? Surely vegetable soup can only be vegetarian?

They do a variety called vegetable beef.  And possibly use meat stock in other vegetable varieties.

Hell even their baked beans aren't vegetarian

This is about as retro/ghetto/70s as it gets, and I still do it every few months.

You haven't lived until you've taken the "Golden Cream of Mushroom", poured it over a few inch-thick pork chops in a flat/wide baking pan, covered the pan, and baked that sucker in the oven at 250F for 3-4 hours.  You'll get pork you can cut with a plastic spoon.

It's the ultimate in zero-prep-time cooking.  I usually go all-out, and spend an extra two minutes quartering a couple of potatoes.  Toss the potatoes into the mix after the first hour, and they'll be cooked and flavorful, but not completely mushy.
