Subject: Pancake Day on Tuesday

Written By: Philip Eno on 02/03/08 at 2:28 am

Next Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday, or better known as Pancake Day.

How do you have you pancakes?

Is there a secret formula?

What is you favourite topping or flavouring?

I love pancakes with plain old Mrs Butterworth's syrup.

my father makes pancakes with corn niblets in them. I don't know why but they are good.

I also like crepes. no fruit topping just tons of powdered sugar.

My mom makes crepes with raisins in them ...also very good.

Philip you must remember what we think of as pancakes Americans call crepes.  ;D

I like mine with Lyle's Golden Syrup. Did you know that it has the oldest design for a label as it has remained unchanged for over 100 years(the lion and the bees).

The pancakes can have a hint of Vanilla, but generally it is the traditiional mix for the batter and when served with a light sprinkling of sugar and lemon juice.

I'll try lemon if you'll try maple syrup  :)

Do they have the array of pancakes over there that we do, like Blueberry, Banana, Banana Nut, Strawberry and Whip Cream, Cinnamon Apple?

Traditional, the pancakes are eaten to clear out the food cupboards for Lent, so technically anything goes?

No reason to for me to color coat it, over here tradition dictates that we over indulge.

The sugar used is Castor Sugar, not in any other form.

I prefer the English pancakes (crepes) - with loads of lime juice and sprinkled heavily with sugar! Mmmm! My mother couldn't make them fast enough!  ;D

So your mother would start cooking about now on the Sunday?

Not quite that early but pretty much - haha. She had 4 kids wolfing them down. She used to make the batter from scratch too. Nowadays Tesco do quite nice ones pre-packaged - very cheap n cheerful.

By the way, I meant lemon juice in my last post, not lime. And the juice always had to be...

As a kid we just had lemon juice (Jif) and sugar.  Or v occasionally Lyles golden syrup

Dai likes to sprinkle some raisins in just after puring the batter in the pan.  We then either have maple syrup or lemon and sugar.  The children like to spread Nutella on them.

Blueberry pancakes are good.

As for crepes I like them filled with ice cream (chocolate), topped with more chocolate and whipped cream.  Yum!!!!
