Life is uncertain. If you can't make up your mind between eating dessert first or eating the main course first, eat dessert with the main course.
To that end, I did three homebrewed variations of the Luther Burger, which was also known as the Fat Kreme as far back as 2003.
A Luther Burger is a bacon cheeseburger wherein the "bun" component has been replaced with a Krispy Kreme donut. There's some question as to whether the bun should consist of two donuts, or of one donut sliced in half and toasted, and if you go for the sliced single donut approach, whether you should apply the donut to the meat with the toasted-sides-out (sugar side in) or the toasted-sides-in (as in a conventional burger bun, but with a gooey sugar coating).
Purpose: Evaluate the three popular methods of Luther Burger construction.
Hypothesis: Are you nuts? I had no freaking idea what any of these were going to taste like.
Methodology: Three Luther burgers were prepared, ungarnished except for the cheese and the bacon. Burger meat was a spicy mix of ground round, and a spice package featuring salt, pepper, crushed garlic, fine-chopped onion, and an egg and a dash of breadcrumbs to hold it all together. Experimental bites of each burger were garnished with a dash of ketchup alone, mustard alone, or ketchup-and-mustard. No pickles, onions, relish, lettuce, tomato, or other condiments were tested. Fried eggs have been left as an exercise for a future experiment.
PROTIP: When toasting the donut, remember that the oils in a donut will be a lot hotter than the water in a conventional hamburger bun. So will the sugar atop the donut. It won't brown or catch fire, but it will be dangerously hot. Do not attempt use your bare hands to retrieve the donut-buns from the grill. You would have figured this out after your first failed attempt, but I'm going to spare your fingers the abuse. The donuts, when warm, are very easy to squash. By using a spatula to retrieve the donut halves, you'll not only save yourself some pain, your burgers will also have a more imposing presence on the plate.
Observations:
Burger 1) Two donuts, warmed, but not toasted
Tasty, but too sugary, even for the relatively thick burgers I make.
The sugar dominated the flavor of the meat, resulting in something tasty, but unbalanced.
Burger 2) One donut, sliced open and toasted, with toasted-side-out, sugar-side in.
This is a burger made of God and Win, your fingers stay mostly clean, and the sugar balances nicely with the spices in the burger and the salt/smoke of the bacon and cheese. The crunch of the toasted donut face was the first thing to hit the tongue, and provided an interesting variation in texture and flavor. Completely delicious, but read on...
Burger 3) One donut, sliced open and toasted, with toasted-side in, gooey sugar side out.
This is a burger made of Win and God, wherein your fingers get gooey, and you get a burst of sugar flavor on your tongue that is only - after a few seconds of chewing - balanced and replaced by the salt/spices/smoke of the burger. Completely delicious, but a completely different experience from #2.
Conclusions:
I'm going to recommend the Luther Burger. Condiments could use further experimentation, but I think you're going to do best keeping the condiments light, and emphasizing spices in the burger. Ketchup, mustard, if you roll that way, but probably nothing else is going to go well with the sugar/spice mix that forms the basis of the Luther. I'm optimistic about trying one with a fried egg as a topping, as the flavor of the yolk should go well with both the yeasty/doughy flavor of the donut as well as with the bacon and smoke components in the rest of the burger.
I couldn't really make up my mind as to which way to deal with the toasted bun. Burgers #2 and #3 were both different, yet awesome in their own ways. I concluded the experiment by alternating bites between each burger.
I'm going to recommend that if you try this at home, that you go for one burger with the toasted face out, and a second burger with the toasted face in. They're both delicious, but in entirely different ways.
Suggested liquid accompaniment: Milk. I can't think of a wine or beer that would go with the sugar. I tried it with soda to cut the obvious grease, but the sweetness from the donuts was so overpowering that the soda tasted bland in comparison. Milk, on the other hand, was a refreshingly neutral flavor. Think "cake and ice cream", and you're getting the right idea.
Don't just eat that hamburger. Eat the hell out of it.

^ I see you're also a reader of A Hamburger Today. Do you read Slice as well?
By the way, I don't know if I could do the hamburger/donut thing. I'm not a big fan of Krispy Kreme.

I'm not a big fan of Krispy Kreme.
HERETIC. UNCLEAN!!1!one!1!!eleventy1!
But as long as I'm now reading Slice (and really liking what I'm reading!), I'll suggest that you try any plain glazed donut (probably best to go with the traditional yeast-risen donut, rather than the cake-style of donut, because the yeast donut is less likely to crumble to dust than an "old-fashioned" cakey donut).
I think you're onto something, and you might even do better than I did; the distinguishing characteristic of the Krispy Kreme is that it's light and airy, which means it's pretty easy to squash into a thin gooey ribbon when used as a hamburger bun. A conventional yeast-based donut might hold its structure better than a Krispy Kreme, and something like a dutchie (square, no hole, yeast-based, typically with raisins) would definitely make a better bun than a bun with a big hole in the center.

Gosh, a Luther burger frightens me. :o I saw a burger on TV last night that was slathered with peaunut butter. (The things Andrew Zimmern will dare to eat!) It was called a "Goober Burger" I prefer mine simple with mayo, pickles and onions. ;D ;D
Anyway, I helped my father cook some fried porck chops, pork and beans --with onions--and sone white rice. Yum-o. ;)

Yeah, I can't really eat Krispy Kremes. It's like giving myself instant diabetes.
Slice just did a story about a restaurant in my neighborhood (Caffe Florian) which I now need to go try.

As do we. It is also like the ONLY food that Jason will voluntarily eat.
Rice was talking to his aunt later that night. When he told her that we had just eaten jook, she asked if he had cooked it. He told her I did, and her reaction was along the lines of :o. It amused me for some reason. ;D
And the last thing I cooked was a tri tip, baked potatoes, mushrooms, and I threw together a salad to go with it. The tri tip turned out excellent, which shocked me because I really had no idea what I was doing. But it was medium rare, still juicy, and very tender. Perfect!

his aunt was probably thinking "that white girl can cook jook"? ;D it is amusing I think it's about time that this yugoslavian/spaniard (me) made some jook for my chinese family too :)
...tonight I made some chorizo with ground beef and scrambled eggs and ate it in tortillas. it was hecka good ::)

Oh man, I miss the chorizo my dad buys from some market in California. It was delicious. And the last thing I baked was a lasagna last night.

I pan fried some chicken filet strips.
Then I cut some onion tinned baby tomatos and mushroom slices, I then proceeded to sautee it down with Garlic, ginger, lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper.
Once this was cooked, I poured it over the chicken strips and that was my dinner ready :)
Took less than 15 minutes.

you should try it, it's hecka good. the 3 ingredients go well together, especially in a warm tortilla, but make sure to drain the grease from the chorizo really well.
...last thing I cooked was 2 big hunks or filets of fresh salmon on my bbq grill, McCormick makes spice rubs and I got this one exclusively for salmon. I sprinkled some on and put some lemon slices on them and they came out pretty good

Pork fried rice, lettuce stir fried with seitan, and something that I only know as 1-4-7 eggs (one can of chicken broth and four eggs scrambled together and steamed for 7 minutes or longer...I also add a preserved duck egg chopped up).

my Chinese co-workers keep telling me to add the 1000 year old egg to my jook and I ain't having it 8-P however Lady Di likes them. my dinner was good, not from scratch, but tasted like it. McCormick has a really good packaged country gravy mix and I fried up some reduced fat Jimmy Dean sausage and made some pillsbury grands and it was pretty darn good. I should have had a couple scrambled eggs. maybe next time

Not a fan of them, huh? :D
Ah yes, I put them in my jook, too. A couple of those with some broken up Costco rotisserie chicken and topped off with some green onions....mmmm. I didn't think I would like them because they look really ugly, but they're delicious when mixed with other things.
And if people are wondering what we're talking about, it looks like the attached picture. Yummy looking, no? ;D

Spaghetti Sauce with fresh sweet basil from the garden, tomatoes, sausage, and Red Onion, over Barilla Rotini plus. (very tasty) I was surprised the whole wheat pasta was really good. When we tried it about 10 or 12 years ago it tasted like straw 8-P, so this was a nice surprise.
