Subject: Retro Candy, the stuff you used to eat as a kid.....

Written By: Badfinger-fan on 03/19/08 at 2:24 am

I just stumbled upon a candy I'd forgotten all about, but loved them as a kid in the 60's, & early 70's they were called Flicks, and were sort of like Hershey Kisses and came in a cylindrical tube.

I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a Clark Bar, but they still sell them and you can order them at specialty candy shops online

I loved the Marathon bar, which was this long caramel braid covered in chocolate.

Anybody remember "Tootsie Pop Drops"?

Basically like a tootsie pop (hard candy outside, w/tootsie roll inside) but instead of a lollipop it was a rolled up candy, like a bigger life saver without the hole.

I haven't seen those for years.

They still make Starburst... so that isn't so retro... But I remember Strawberry Starburst used to be sold in packs all by theirselves... Which is a sort of retro thing that I haven't seen since I was a kid.

I remember the Marathon bar from my childhood too!  According to the Food Network show Unwrapped Mars discontinued the bar in 1981 due to poor sales.

I also recall candy cigarettes (probably would not be politically correct to manufacture them today) and the Summit candy bar (with the classic commercial tag "Homework Homework
Give me a break!)  :)

Wacky Wafers, those were the best, much better than Bottle Caps, Tart N' Tinys those little Sweet Tarts, Chick o Sticks, Bubs Daddy bubble gum, those really long Pixie Sticks, Charms suckers, Tangy Taffy, Jolly Rancher Sticks. I don't think any of these are made anymore, except Chick o sticks.  :(

Whatchamacallit candy bars (before they added the caramel), Pixy sticks, Pop Rocks, Bubble Tape, and those lollipops with the bubble gum in the center (I forget the name!).

My childhood favorites: Chick-O-Sticks, Chunky (with or without raisins), Nik-l-Nips (wax bottles filled with a sweet liquid),
Swedish fish (the real ones not those small things sold in bags but the giant ones for a penny), Neeco Wafers, Bottle Caps,
those buttons stuck on paper, Candy Necklaces, Charms, Chuckles, Charleston Chews and Peanut Chews.

Edit to add:

Red Hot Dollars, Hot Tamales, Mike and Ike, Mary Janes, Shoelace licorice, Pixie Sticks, Bit-O-Honey, Snow Caps and
Bazooka Bubble Gum (I had to read the Bazooka Joe Comics).

Black Jacks taffy, which I believe sensative people demanded they change the name...and then blackjack gum.

Here's an oldie but goodie but the name escapes me...it had a Hawaiian name and others made it using another one:

it was like a cookie snack bar, (similar to Haystack Girl Scout Cookies)..with baked coconut, chocolate drizzle, and caramel in it..

Not sure why they stopped making it..too expensive? I know they may have to be as my other favorite 'NABISCO SUGAR WAFERS' cost $4.99 a box!
All it is- is wafers and creme! Yet Oreos and Chips Ahoys are chocolate, sugar, cream, etc..why such a higher price? Never understood.

To me, they taste like the inside of a Butterfinger. Not sure if anyone else thinks that though.

And I like them because they are pretty low in fat and stuff, so they make a great diet candy if you're craving something sweet.

Honestly I never heard of Chick O Sticks before. A co-worker was eating one that she bought from the gift shop at the hospital where I work. I thought they were something new until I read this thread.

They still make these, our snack box at school (in the teachers lounge) had them for sale at the end of the school year (along with mallowmars, and clark bars - I think it is retro).

BRING BACK THE MARATHON BAR :\'(

And whatever happened to Pal bubblegum - individually wrapped bubblegum pieces (similar to double bubble - but good - no wintergreen flavor). Tasted more like Bazooka, but did not get hard....

Certs fruit flavored

Quench gum -awsome flavor for the first five seconds then you needed a new piece.

Tic Tac multi flavored pacs (purple, orange, green and white in the same box) I loved the purple ones and they only came in this package.  Was there something similar called dynamints???

Fire jolly rancher sticks.

When I was a child, my favourite sweets were cola bottles (they once made my hands sticky), watermelon-flavoured bubble gum that looked like a watermelon and had black hundreds and thousands inside them, various Wispa bars (Original Wispa, Wispa Gold, Wispa Mint and Wispa Bite), Cadbury's Buttons, Snickers, Aero, milk bottles, Skittles, Opal Fruits (now Starburst), Smarties (the UK candy that is similar to M & Ms) and Fruit Salad chews to name but a few. There was also a chocolate bar from my childhood called Secret. It had a marshmallow centre and an intersting bird's-nest style texture. Now I love Smarties even more becuase they contain no artificial colours or flavours. The blue Smarite has recently made a comeback, but it's much lighter than the blue Smartie from my childhood.
