What are some of the weirdest flavors of Ice Cream you've seen on the supermarket shelf?

I've never tried a truly weird flavor, just some with strange names like Chunky Monkey and Cherry Garcia.

Moose tracks is my daughter's favorite.  Have you ever tried it?

I watched an episode of Bizarre Foods, Japan seems to have the weirdest flavors.  They seem to favor fish flavored ice creams.  8-P

Moose tracks is vanilla ice cream with thick fudge and peanut butter cups in it.

Let's see... probably not really weird, but I've had a couple of flavors of Haagan Daas not too long ago that I never really heard of.

One was ginger ice cream(This one was actually pretty good). The other one was Passion Fruit, which wasn't bad, but it would been better as a sorbet.(Milk and cream doesn't mix as well with certain fruits)

Ben and Jerry's definetly has some unique flavors. I actually bought a Ben and Jerry's pint that had stout cream ice cream swirled with chocolate ice cream.

^ I think it's amusing and paradoxical that their advertisement says "new" and "since 1926" in the same space.  I guess it would be new if it were 1927, but I digress.  And yes I do understand that they meant it's a new flavor from an old company.  ::) ;) ;D

I was watching "Mexico: One Plate at a Time" and Rick Bayless made ice cream out of...Poblano Peppers!

Here's the recipie....

Mexican Chocolate Chile Ice Cream
Helado de Chocolate y Chile Pasilla

Makes 1 quart

Recipe from Season 6 of Mexico - One Plate at a Time

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ingredients
1 large pasilla negro chile, stemmed, seeded and, if you wish, deveined
1 1/3 cups half-and-half
2 ounces Mexican chocolate, chopped into small pieces
3 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, preferably 70% Venezuelan, chopped into 1/4-inch pieces
4 egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/3 cups heavy cream
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla, preferably Mexican vanilla
2 tablespoons Kahlua or other coffee liqueur

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Directions
1.    Make the chile infusion.  In a small skillet heated over medium, toast the chile, pressing it flat against the skillet with a metal spatula until it is very aromatic - about 10 seconds per side.  Place in a small saucepan, add the half-and-half, Mexican chocolate and the semi-sweet chocolate, and heat over medium until steaming (but not boiling).  Cover and let steep for 10 minutes, then pour into a blender jar and process until the chile is pureed.

2.    Set up a double boiler.  Set up a 4-quart saucepan, filled halfway with water, into which you can nestle a 3-quart stainless steel bowl.  Bring the pot of water to a boil over high heat while you're preparing the custard base.

3.    Cook the base.  In the 3-quart stainless steel bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until thoroughly combined, then whisk in the chile-infused chocolate mixture. Reduce the temperature under the pot of boiling water to maintain a gentle simmer.  Set the bowl of custard base over the simmering water and whisk frequently, scraping down the sides of the bowl regularly with a rubber spatula, until the mixture thickens noticeably, about 5 minutes. The custard is sufficiently cooked when it reaches 180 degrees on an instant-read thermometer.  (You can also test it by dipping a wooden spoon into the custard, then running your finger through the custard:  if the line holds clearly, the custard has thickened sufficiently.) For the finest texture, pour the custard through a fine-mesh strainer into a similar-size stainless steel bowl.

4.    Cool the base.  Fill a large bowl halfway with ice. Nestle a smaller bowl into the ice and pour the custard through a fine-mesh strainer into the bowl in the ice bath.  Whisk the mixture until it is completely cool.  Refrigerate if not using immediately.

5.    Finishing the base, freeze the ice cream.  Stir the heavy cream, vanilla and Kahlua into the base.  Freeze in an ice cream freezer according to the manufacturer's directions. Scrape into a freezer container and freeze for several hours to firm.

How odd is that?

At one of the local festivals where I grew up, in the fall, they sold pumpkin ice cream.  I always wanted to try it but never got around to it.

When I was a little girl, we had a family reunion on my dad's side of the family.  I remember they made homemade ice cream using an electric ice cream maker.  Watermelon was one of the concoctions.  As I recall it wasn't too bad, just different.

They have Watermelon and Cantalope Flavored Ice Cream, and If I had a cooler and Ice with me...I'd take some home.

And if I'm going this year...that's exactly what I'm going to do!

We'd go to this local ice cream parlor and they'd have Superman ice cream.  I'd have to laugh everytime because I'd picture ice cream with little bits of Superman ground up into it.  Yes, I'm not normal.

It's a pretty ice cream, thought about trying it, but I'm pretty boring with ice cream.

I'm guessing they call it Superman because they use the colors that Superman wears in his costume/uniform.

The brand I got of the Ginger ice cream I got was the Haagen Daas 5 variety. It's not powerful, you can tell it's ginger, but not quite as strong as ginger snaps.

I suspected Ben & Jerry were not the geniuses people though.  They just smoked so much weed they would try to mix anything into ice cream!

One of the best flavors they had "Bovinity Divinity" Chocolate/white chocolate contrast with milk chocolate cows.
Great stuff.  Not so goopy as "Phish Food," which is a bit much even for me.

Ok - so I was just looking for recipes to use leftover pulled pork....  AND SURE ENOUGH someone suggested making (and that they have made, and even took it to there workplace - and the people liked it; but they would never eat it again just cause it sounds gross) pulled pork ice cream.  You make homemade vanilla, or sweet cream and put some pulled pork bits in it...  Now I am not sold on this; and I do not believe I will be doing it anytime soon.

So this brought me to this place in San Fran - prosciutto ice cream (and some other various weird flavors) - not sure if my exotic tastes can quite handle this. ???

It's only because pork chop ice cream is probably illegal in 34 states owing to it being illegal to sell bones for human consumption or some crap some Statheouse clerks slapped together in 1924.
http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/07/oink.gif

How about ham, scrambled eggs, two strips of bacon, hash browns, pumpernickel toast, coffee, and orange juice flavored ice cream?  Ben & Jerry have a theory that one needed to strain the stomach acids from the residuals of various meals test subjects had vomited up.  The essence theory has worked quite well in dealing with confections, but dealing with the entire spectrum of flavors between communion wafers and Uncle Bobo's Super Hot Spicy Chili!  The venture of Messrs Green and Cohen was kept alive by massive sales from human-vomit derived flavors such as Chunky Monkey and Chubby Hubby and Wibby Wubby, and something I liked called Aloha Macedonia, and then you find out all the ingredients have been vomit-tested.  I wasn't going to eat the stuff.  They had to shoot me with the tranquilizer gun three times and as I finally went under, I remember screaming, "Give me vomit-free  ice cream or give me death!"
http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/12/icescream.gif
:o

But if they want to get Crepe Suzette, Cape Cod Lobster Bisque, and Beef Wellington because they need a lot more grant money.  Though I am certain all will make wonderful ice creams, that's a lot of vomit to test!

The next time I make some, I'll puree a chunk and throw it in with some ice cream, just to say I did it.

But what's really wrong here is the notion of "leftover" and "pulled pork".  I don't get it.  Pulled pork is so awesome that it all gets eaten long before it can be considered leftovers.  Or it gets wrapped up, frozen, and gently thawed during those days when you don't feel like firing up the smoker for a single sandwich.  That's not "leftovers", that's "emergency stash", or if it turned out really good, it's "private reserve".

We had a whole hog roast, the weather turned sorta icky, so we were 20 or so people down... SOOOO we had a whole roaster full of pulled pork.  SO yes I froze it in gallon bags, but we have gone over about 3 bags and we are honestly tired of it, gave 3 away, and still have 2 in the freezer :P  SO if you have any ideas for leftovers, then please tell me about them.

Visit your local retailer and ask.  (If you get to the checkout counter and they ask if you found everything you were looking for, say you didn't, and that you were looking for "that Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, the one inspired by the SNL skit about - I'm sorry, the name's kinda funny - Schweddy Balls".)

I'm actually being serious about something here.

There's no real objection on the part of any retailer for carrying it, except that they get a few letters from the usual suspects, and because there are no requests from Sane America, they chicken out.  The usual suspects, this time, would be "One Million Moms" - yet another one of dozens of front groups for the American Family Association, who are (to put it lightly) hardcore Dominionists.  I'm for the right of anyone to worship whoever they want, which means I gotta draw the line at Dominionists, who start with the premise that the First Amendment needs to be rewritten to institute a union between Church and State, with Church predominant.

The only way to beat these people is to expose and discredit them.  It starts with asking your local retailer to tell the head office to pay no attention to a front group for the American Taliban.  It starts by saying that a Real American oughta be more embarassed about remembering an SNL episode from 1998 than he or she is about wanting to eat a bowl of Schweddy Balls, but that a little embarassment is no reason to deny oneself some ice cream.

I like malt balls (and I'm too lazy to make a Chef pun on salted/malted tonight), so my mileage may vary relative to yours, but (its use in beer notwithstanding) there's a reason malt was quick to catch on at ice cream parlors. If you're on a food board, and you've not yet had a malted milkshake, you're missing out. Find a place that still offers them, and try one.

It's pretty good, but not for everyone.

10. Secret Breakfast

Available at San Francisco ice cream haunt Humphry Slocombe, this flavor contains a wacky mix of bourbon and cornflakes. The most surprising part? It's incredibly tasty. Other unique Slocombe flavors include cream cheese, sour cream, and peanut butter-curry.

I think it's also because of the fact that it's one of the flavors that works well with toppings.

Several years back Burger King came out with the Bacon Sundae.  Naturally (in the interest of science of course), I just had to try one.

It was just vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate syrup, but also it had two strips of bacon on top and smaller chunks of bacon mixed in with the ice cream.  Not surprisingly it wasn't very good, although that wasn't necessarily because it was a bacon sundae but because it was a Burger King bacon sundae. In other words, I didn't think that the concept of a bacon sundae wasn't all that bad, it's just that the high-risk combination of those ingredients coupled with Burger King's inherent sh!tiness was a recipe for failure, and I thought that if Baskin-Robbins or Dairy Queen or any other higher quality ice cream chain would have made the bacon sundae, it could have been really good.

I had the Carl's Jr. Bacon sundae. When I started it it was really good. It tasted just like bacon. Even tho it was sweet I could taste the smoke of the bacon.

I basically sipped, continuously, the first half of the shake.  Then I stopped to post on fb how good it was.

Mid way through my post the after taste hit me.  It was horrible. I even tried drinking more of the shake to get the yumminess back....that was a mistake. It tasted even worse.

Basically the shake was good if you drank the whole thing without stopping at all....and if yo were willing to deal with the he after taste.  Once you stopped tho the battle was lost.
