Subject: Fish and Cheese--What the Heck?

Written By: apollonia1986 on 06/06/10 at 1:21 pm

Hi Everyone!

One of my favorite shows on Tv to watch is Chopped on Food Network. (Aaron Sanches is cute!) Anyway, during one of the competitions one of the cheps made fish witha  kidn of cheese sauce. And all the judges marked him down saying you dont mix fish with cheese. I dont understand it. I've eaten thousands of fish sandwhiches in my life with cheese on them, and it seemed fine to me.

Is it bad to eat fish with cheese? ???

On a side note my father claimed that if you drank milk while eating fish it would make me sick. Have been eating fish and drinking milk since 1989, Haven't been sick yet! LOL.

Thanks!

There's nothing unhealthy about it, but I'm trying to think of a fish/cheese pairing that'd actually work, and I'm drawing a blank.  Might work in a sauce (cheese as something to add fat/body/salt to something like an alfredo sauce), but even that'd be pushing it.

Now you've got me wondering, what kinda fish, what kinda cheese?

Gimmee back that Filet O' fish, give me that fish!

Not a big fish eater here, other then the occasional Filet O' Fish when I want to pretend I'm eating healthy... They always have cheese on it (as you said).

I think professional chefs tend to be snobbish anyway (although it doesn't stop me from watching way too many Food network and Cooking channel shows.)  ::) ;D

Cheese is a dairy product and fish is seafood so it's pretty good for you health-wise.

Was it an Italian dish?  Apparently cheese and fish in Italian cooking is a big no-no.

I've never heard of that myself, since I put it on Fish sandwiches as well.

McDonalds fish sandwiches don't really count as food, I'm not sure what they really have in those things.

Fish and cheese are fine together. It's all good (unless you dislike fish/and/or cheese)

It's not a matter of it being healthy, for the most part they are, except for the filet-o-fish...

Most fish has a delicate, mild flavor. Fish should taste of the sea, and should be consumed as close to the catch as possible to ensure this. And it should be served simply, for the same reason. The rich, salty flavors of cheese can too easily overwhelm the flavors of fish, forcing a contrast not only in intensity of flavor, but also a sacrifice of the integrity of both ingredients. Grated cheese over a fish pasta is considered either extraneous, excessive, or demeaning.

What's Jim Beam?

Cheap bourbon whiskey, my friend.

I'd order a shot of that, and a pint of Steel Rail Pale Ale.  Repeat as necessary.  That bar only cut me off once because I was leaning out the second-floor pool room window yelling at people.

Oh, I wasss jjjjust ss-ss-ssaying hulloooooo to all the folks out there!

This wasn't the bouncer, but the big waitress NOBODY wants to mess with.  They sat me down with some seltzer and lemon, and I was happy, and I didn't go yelling hulloooo at all the folks out there again!

Fish Florentine is a classic french dish... fillets of fish baked in a cheese and spinach sauce.

The Italians know food.  They know how to prepare it and they know how to cook it.  As you go farther north in Europe, the cuisine gets steadily worse.  I was in northern Scotland.  The food was barbaric.  The folks were nice in the morning while they were sober!
