Subject: Foods you dislike because of the texture

I'm not a fan of water chestnuts, It reminds me of biting on styrofoam. My boyfriend can't eat coconut because of the texture. I myself love coconut! Another one is Italian Wedding Soup, those tiny round noodles feel so weird in my mouth. Yuck! 8-P

It used to be clams. I always liked clam chowder but I couldn't eat raw clams.

A quick story of my turnaround.

I was at a biker party with a few different Motorcycle Clubs represented. I saw a few kids trying to open some clams; even
though I didn't eat them I knew they weren't shucking them correctly and I was afraid they would cut their fingers off. I tried
to remember how my dad would shuck clams but couldn't so I asked a biker, a very big biker, to show me so I could show
the kids. He said: " First knock to see if they're home. Insert the knife along the muscle, press in and give a pry and there you
go, enjoy." I told him I wasn't going to eat it, I just wanted to show the kids. His reponse: "I got my hands all smelly and you're
not going to eat it." I then said: "Yes I am!" I've been eat them ever since.

Not too many come to mind right now except for certain kinds of olives. The black ones are okay when chopped real small, but I just cannot eat 'em when whole.

I know.  I like them on a pizza.  I was never a fan of eating the whole olive.  I used to get them in martinis, but I never ate them.

Any vegetable made gloppy.  Mashed potatoes excepted.

Sometimes I have a problem with oft desserts like jello, rice pudding, et al.  Otherwise, I'm ok in this department.  NO!  Lettuce.  it squeaks against my teeth and I recently decided to stop purchasing it.

I don't like the texture of goose.  I'll eat it to be polite.  I'm like that about a lot of stuff.  I'm Mr. Picky Eater.  Advice to parents: Do not force feed your child tofu or yeast formulas if he doesn't like them.  That's how I developed a life-long complex about food.

My stepbrother STILL hates cheesecake.  I love the stuff.  Can't get enough.  He won't touch it.  I think he had some traumatic experience with his grandmother forcing it on him when he didn't want it.  Most grandmothers are big on sweets, but only Swedish grandmas are compulsive about it!

Goes to what I was saying before about force-feeding young children food that doesn't agree with them.  I still won't eat tofu, zucchini, squash, boiled carrots, and so forth.  How do you get children to eat their vegetables?  It depends I guess.  I just know force-feeding can cause lifelong repulsion to foods -- in my case a great many.  It's socially awkward too.  I'm not being rude.  I'm sure your pea soup is terrific.  I just cannot ingest the stuff.  Sorry.
http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/14/sad3.gif

Actually, if a few boiled peas or carrots are in, say, chicken noodles soup, that's fine because the taste and texture is not overwhelming.

Water chestnuts. There are alot of dishes I end up spitting out because I crunch down on one. Can you beleive I broke a tooth on one once? (thank God it was in the back of my mouth and didn't affect my smile)

And cooked spinach. I feel like I have mouthful of slugs. It's so slimy. On the other hand, I do liek spinach raw in a salad and often choose it over lettuce. I'd like to punch Popeye for making it look good.

My dad hates pumpkin pie. He won't even eat a pumpkin donut from DD. I keep telling him it tastes just like sweet potato pie and he still won't eat it. Claims its stringy.  ???

I can't speak for BM4E, but I LOVE shrimp cocktail.  Shrimp with hot sauce.  Yum!  Glad I'm not kosher!  No pork and no shellfish!

I even eat the roe from lobster, which other people think is dis-gusting!

Nobody ever made me eat seafood, that's why I think I like it!

You know what texture I hate?  Iceberg lettuce and under ripe tomato.  I'm forever specifying NO lettuce and tomatoes on burgers and sandwiches!

OHHHH the 1/2 cooked pancakes are my favorite!  I love the malty flavor they have.

Nuts are great, as long as they are good nuts, but in every batch of nuts (peanuts, brazil, pecans, walnuts, etc...) you get a bad nut or two, and those are HORRIBLE.  They dry out your mouth, make it feel like you just ate cotton, and leave a putrid taste you cannot get rid of.  I love peanut mm's but again, you always get a bad one in every package, and that bad one makes you wonder if it is worth it...  :P

Nigella Lawson, a cook who's show they show on The Cooking Channel suggests, if you do try a pomegranate, try slicing it in half and then hitting the outside peel/skin with a rolling pin (the llittle seeds will "pop" out if you aim the juicy part towards a plate (and hopefully not the floor)

Sounds reasonable, I've never tried the fruit fresh, just had the juice in blends and things...  I'm almost intrigued enough to buy one and try it.

I don't know if I'd mentioned it before or not, but just the look of Oysters on t.v. is enough to make me not want to even try them.  Slimy seafood equals two strikes for me, and that is enough for me to not even try.  lol

Really... we always eat the seed in pomegranates, it has part of the antioxidant properties, and fiber....  We love them (they are somewhat of a pain to get the little gems out of the fruit itself though)

I've always eaten the seed, too.  As a kid we called them Chinese Apples.

I didn't mean garlic in cottage cheese, I've never eaten cottage cheese, let alone cottage cheese with garlic(or fruit in it). I was talking about the fact that I can't stand the odor that cottage cheese has(which has kept me from eating it),  but love garlic in the other types of food I eat even though it's odor is pretty powerful.

Cooked egg whites---it's got a rubbery texture so my eggs have to contain plenty of yolk

Astro flavoured yogurt---Because I opened a container today...and it was very runny! Even after I added some banana, it was still quite liquid. I just have a strong dislike for runny yogurt for some reason.

Canned chicken---it's got a bit of a gelatin-like texture which just is not right for chicken.

I've eaten haggis (and liked it!).  Green beans blanched in any stew are a win, and compared to haggis, that looks delicious, though I can't imagine the cartilage in the pork ears has as nice a texture.  I'd try it!

This isn't really a food item by itself, but I just can't tolerate getting corn starch on my fingers. It leaves a unique creepy sensation I can't describe, but has about the same effect on me as fingernails raking a chalkboard has on others. It's just a "gaaaaa, get it off" feeling.

spinach is cooked (my mother in butter), then heavy cream is added to it and cooked further until liquid reduces.... not a favorite of mine.

Creamed corn... I cut my corn from the cob, making sure to scrape all the "corn cream/juice" from the cob, I heat it up, and add butter, sugar, salt, pepper, and cream to it - reduce -  freeze in bags  YUM

(BTW - either of the above out of a can - YUCK!)

Homemade freezer creamed corn is delicious!  Out of a can it is like a mush, and imo gross.  Spinach I just do not believe it should ever be cooked!

Rachel Ray combines both veggies in creamy goodness.  Not sure how they'd taste together, but if I weren't such a lazy cook, I might try them together

Ingredients

    * 2 tablespoons butter
    * 4 ears corn, kernels scraped from cob
    * 2 large cloves garlic, finely chopped
    * Salt and freshly ground black pepper
    * 1/2 cup heavy cream
    * Freshly grated nutmeg, to taste
    * 2 bundles fresh farm spinach, about 1/2 pound trimmed weight, chopped

Directions

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the butter. When the butter is hot, stir in the corn and the starchy liquid scraped from the cobs. Cook for 5 minutes, then stir in the garlic and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes more, then add the cream and nutmeg, stirring occasionally, until very creamy, about 15 minutes. Add the spinach and stir until wilted. Season with salt and pepper, if needed. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve.
