Sometimes we all over do it.  Maybe we eat something that doesn't agree with us.  Maybe we're nervous.  What are your recommendations for the various gastric upsets we might encounter?

My most frequent problem is acid indigestion.  TUMS are the most efficacious for me.

Occasionally the problem gets prolonged.  This is less because of my diet (which is never all that great in the first place) and more because of changes in my medication regimen or if my anxiety disorders start grinding in my guts.  It's pricey, but Prilosec is worth every penny.

I usually take alka seltzers. One of the medicines I take for dialysis builds up ALOT of gas in my ches tot the point where I feel like I'm having a heart attack. And an alka seltzer helps me to burp off the excess. Without being rushed to the ER again and having EKG electrides hooked to me.  >:(

And taking three days to pull all the little electrodes off.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

For an nausea/vomiting - the best cure is Coke Classic!  Works everytime, even with children or adults, this family asks for coke when ill.  WARNING it has to be Coke Classic, not Pepsi, not Cherry Coke, not diet coke, not coke extra .... etc....

Tums are a bit chalky but I swallow it with water and it dissolves fast.

When I was little my parents used to get Coke Syrup from the drug store.  Whenever we had an upset stomach we got a tablespoon of the stuff.

I use Tums on occasion.

I usually have a glass of 7 up if I can't find the seltzers.

It;s only bad if you burp and it burns your nose. That hurts!  8-P

GOT NAUSEA?  Get this, this stuff saves me when nausea is the problem.  It is sticky sweet, but works like nothing else does.

NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM...

I yak at the smell of the stuff, I even yak if someone has those icky cheap wintergreen pink chalky candies that smell like pepto...

My husband was once not feeling well on a trip and he went into a gas station, and I decided to go use the rest room.  When I got back into the car, he was in there and had just opened the bottle and took a swig (without my knowledge), I slid into the fumes of pepto and reopened the door and puked....  I gagged for 1/2 hour after that because I thought I could still smell it... 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P

definitely TUMS, usually 2 or 3 tablets help but I'll ingest as many as 5 if needed, and also Maalox is good

I read somewhere that eating Parmesan Cheese is a folk remedy in Italy to settle your stomach.  Don't know if it works or not.  I don't know if you can use the stuff in a can or it has to be the expensive stuff...

Grate fresh ginger into a cup of tea.

Chamomile tea helps, speaking of tea.  I drank a bunch over the holiday.  I had much more rich food than I'm used to!  I also took Tums after xmas dinner.  I pilfered more than my share of goose!  It was very rich and fatty and ohhhh so tasty!

I'm surprised that this is a common remedy because I would think that drinking anything carbonated would make things worse.

For me the best remedy would be to hit the toilet (lol) but since this is under the food board I would say that peppermint tea helps. I also find that bananas are gentle on my stomach.

Sometimes cofffee would give me heartburn, now I throw a sliver of ginger in when I brew it.  The taste is subtle and the ginger is supposed to be a good homeopathic remedy for a some of what ails you

"arthritis, diarrhea, flu, headache, heart and menstrual problems, diabetes, and probably the most well-known, stomach upset and motion sickness"

I'm bummed because the thing that works best for me has been taken off the market temporarily :(  Rolaids Soft Chews....there was some problem with the sugar in some lots of it made at certain plants or something crystallizing?  I didn't have a problem with any of it I bought, but it's gone until March or April, I think :'(

I have a prescription for Zantac (generic form), but my insurance doesn't cover it so I have to pay for the entire thing...it runs me around $30/month or something.  I tried the ones that they WILL cover and they don't work.  I also tried the OTC version and it didn't work, either, even though I took the same dosage and it's supposedly the same medicine (not to mention, it's more expensive than the prescription, go figure)???

Impossible.  There's stuff in ginger.  If you're putting a whole sliver of ginger in anything smaller than the Pacific Ocean as a homeopathic remedy, you're overdosing by a factor of several billion.

(There are active ingredients in ginger.  As an herbal remedy, ginger may or may not have benficial or adverse effects on certain conditions.  That's pretty waffly.  I'll go on record as saying it's damn tasty stuff to use in cooking.)

But herbal remedies (quacky as some of them are) are at least plausible.   Homeopathy requires something completely different.  It asserts that the more you dilute something, the more potent it becomes; most homeopathic "products" have been diluted to the point that it's physically impossible for even a molecule of the ingredient to exist in the bottle.  If that sounds prespammersite to you, congratulations, and welcome to reality.

If you're making money off of homeopathy, you need a counterargument.  The way in which homeopaths get around the obvious fact is by asserting (by pulling the idea straight out of somewhere) that water has a "memory" of whatever was once in contact with it, which brings to mind an obvious question:  if water has a memory, and if the more diluted you dilute your ingredient, the more powerful that memory is, then... well, that.  (Semi-NSFW warning: Poster has a naughty word.  And a cross-sectional diagram illustrating how a toilet works.)

If water has a memory, then homeopathy is full of crap.

Anyways, I'm a user of soda and/or gatorade for GI remedies.  Problems in the upper GI tract, throw down something that makes you burp, supplies you with some sugar, but doesn't require much effort to digest.  Problems in the lower GI tract?  (Since I'm already knee-deep in toilet humor here :)  Throw down something that features electrolytes, which are what your now-dehydrated body craves.

^ Homeopathy works if you're feeling well.  If I'm having an anxiety meltdown, I'm reaching for Valium, not Rescue Remedy.
