Subject: Popcorn

Written By: yearofthemonkey on 11/20/13 at 5:27 am

Does anyone else not like popcorn?

People have been trying to feed me popcorn for years and I still have no idea what people see in it. Its awful. It doesn't have any taste, the texture is gross and it smells disgusting.

Just curious.

Popcorn is fantastic.  I didn't know anyone could hate it.

There is a franchaise in Canada called Kernels and they sell all different kinds of popcorn from Ketchup flavour to Vanilla flavour.  Sooo gooooooood!  Or just some regular popcorn loaded with Butter.  Oh yeah!

I'm hungry right now!

a kernel of corn cooked in any way has very little taste in any shape or form. Now add some butter and salt to it and it comes alive and becomes an addicting savory treat. Cracker Jack and caramel corn are wonderful ways to eat it too  8)

I don't like it much either. The only kind of popcorn I'd have right now are the flavor coated ones: chocolate, toffee, other flavors....and I would still pick at it. And I find that popcorn always gets stale quickly, which makes it taste even worse.

It doesn't have any taste - true.  You put your own taste onto it.

The texture is gross?  Define "gross"...  If you dislike the annoying little bits of hulls that get stuck in your teeth, nothing can be done about that. If that's your dealbreaker, just stop reading and accept praise from your dentist for cutting off a source of income :)  If your texture objection is that it's greasy, don't use so much butter/oil/etc.

Smells disgusting?  Define "smells"...  I like the standard synthetic butter/salt/hydrogenated-palm-oil crap scent, but I'll acknowledge that it ain't for everybody.

So I'm going to go back to taste.  What would you want it to taste like?  Plain, air-popped or microwave-popped popcorn is a canvas.  If you're in a savory mood, you can paint on it with olive oil, garlic olive oil, melted bacon fact, dust it with cayenne, curry, fresh-ground black pepper...  If you're feeling sweet, a drizzle of a neutral/flavorless oil like peanut oil and a sprinkling of sugar (plain sugar, colored sugar, flavored sugar, brown sugar) will do the trick.

Anything with nuts or chocolate in it. Nilla wafers. Dried fruit. Most potato chips.

Many people say they dislike the texture of foods. Personally, I don't care what kind of texture something has though as long as it tastes good. As far as smell goes, my sense of smell is about ninety percent gone so I wouldn't know.

I wonder if they did a survey if people who dislike one of those are more likely to dislike the others. Maybe theres a predisposion to dislike dry, flavorless and burnt/oily smelling foods?

I like popcorn (I love popcorn from the popcorn stand in my hometown (the popcorn there is delish and it is white, not fluorescent yellow like movie theater popcorn.).

I am alright with the bag pretzels, as long as I have dip (Nutella, honey mustard, raspberry jelly). I love the big, chewy pretzels though! (Scrape off most of the salt)

We can tell the difference.  The thing is the fake stuff tastes better than the real stuff.

It's like a mcdonalds burger you know it's not real beef but you just don't care.
Also McDonald's ketchup is not the same as Heinz. I will only have mcDs ketchup with mcDs food. I cannot use it with any other food. Likewise I can't use good ketchup w mcDs food because it alters the taste of the food.

The problem I have with most popcorn is the salt. I don't like salt and many of the pre-made stuff and microwave stuff is loaded with salt. My fav is the stuff I make myself-not with a popper or in the microwave but in a pot.  :o :o :o :o I put a little oil in the bottom of the pot and then put the kernels in. And I am really good at it because-I am not exaggerating or making this up-there have been a couple of times when EVERY SINGLE KERNEL WAS POPPED!!!!! When I make it that way, I do not put butter or salt on it.

A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, when I was first married to my first husband. It was our first Christmas together. My husband insisted that we buy ourselves a popcorn popper. Ok, no problem. Then one time after Christmas, he said that he wanted popcorn. I said that it would be a chance to try out our new popper. He said to make it on the stove like I always did. I asked him why not use the popper. He said that in a few years when we had kids (which we never did) and they wanted it, it would be easy. THEN WHY THE F*** DID YOU INSIST OF BUYING THE STUPID THING??!!!!

It was probably about 15-20 years ago, I finally got rid of the thing, still in the box and never had been opened.

My favorite brand is the Pop Secret Homestyle.

I also like to spice up my popcorn. After I pop the actual popcorn in the microwave, I melt about fifth of a stick of butter in the microwave and then pour it over the popcorn in the bowl. But that's not it. I also add chili seasoning and Parmesan cheese (the melted butter will help these latter two ingredients stick to the popcorn rather than sieve to bottom of the bowl). Then voila! You have chili cheese popcorn!

but most movie theaters allow you to butter your own popcorn now... so you control how much you want on it...

Btw.... instead of keeping the popcorn in the bag get one of those cardboard trays they have and pour the popcorn in that....that way you can spread the butter across the popcorn instead of just having most of it sit on the popcorn at the top of the bag.

I don't like this fake butter stuff.  It's usually just coconut oil and god only knows what else is in it?

Sometimes people sneak in their own popcorn but eventually you might get caught.

I think movie theater popcorn should be fully popped instead you get towards the end of the bag you get unpopped kernels.

That's because the people who pop it lack proper training on the popcorn machine. Also they don't do a good job of sifting it.

That bin the popcorn sits in has holes at the bottom for the kernels to fall they but if it isn't regularly sifted you get kernels in your popcorn bag.

I used to absolutely hate popcorn. I got interested in it again when I ate lightly buttered popcorn. It was pretty much white, or at least as close to it as possible. Now I love it again, and whenever we have it I always make sure to eat some before we run out!

Does anyone else not like popcorn?

People have been trying to feed me popcorn for years and I still have no idea what people see in it. Its awful. It doesn't have any taste, the texture is gross and it smells disgusting.

Just curious.

I prefer my popcorn sweet with toffee but I only really eat it if I go to the cinema.

every once in a while, i'll add a few drops of hot sauce to the bowl. I also recommend trying various flavored salts. I recommend the Pink Hawaiian or smoked sea salt.
