Subject: What Is It With Rail-Thin Women Today? ? ?

Written By: Hairspray on 01/17/02 at 12:46 a.m.

Lara Flynn Boyle
Calista Flockhart
Courtney Cox

They all look way too thin. They claim they have no obsessions on thinness or eating disorders. Whatever!  ::)

Well, let me just say that when one can count the ribs in a woman's or man's ribcage, that's sick. These women look sickly, not healthy at all.

I hope this trend doesn't last forever. It's not a good one. These people are very bad role models for our young ones.
Don't even get me started on supermodels...

Doesn't everyone like to be able to hold someone with just a little meat on their bones? There is a healthy standard that is Not fat - Just healthy for crying out loud!

I SO agree with that. Thankyou for saying that, I'm glad its not just me that thinks the same. Too many obsessions with thin-ness are going around, in my opinion, too.

You're very welcome.  ;)

Someone had to say it, IMO. What are they thinking? ? ?

That's one of the reasons I have a degree of respect for Drew Barrymore. She's never let herself fall into that all-too-popular trend of becoming part of the "stick" people. She's healthy and looks healthy. And she's still considered one of the world's most beautiful people... Helll-O!!! She definitely deserves credit for that.  :)  ;)

Well I have to agree that skinniest taken to the extremes it has been lately is both unhealthy and unattractive, I do have to argue that, in some cases, it isn't the person's fault.

I spent a lot of my life at 5'11" and 126lbs, and you could count my ribs easily.  I also ate about twice as much as other people, drank weight gainer mixes, lifted weights, and got lots of exercise but I still couldn't gain weight.  I never had any weight related mental illnesses (anorexia or bulemia).  There's just something to say about metabolism...

Understood. Mine was a very generalized statement.
I'll modify to exclude those who can't help it due to metabolism. Though I will express just as strongly that in Hollywood it's an intentional trend, IMHO.

I used to be that thin.  My family thought I was anorexic.  But it was actually because I smoked and rarely bothered to eat.  I'd forget entire meals, until the headache came on.  Sometimes you get so busy, food is the last thing on your mind.  However, since I quit smoking, that is certainly not a problem I have anymore.  ::) lol  I am by no means obese, but I'd like to be somewhere between my too thin days and my current days.

I don't find women that thin even REMOTELY attractive.  As for thoughts of doing anything *ahem* with them, I'd be afraid of breaking them.  I find it sick to see womens bones sticking out.  I used to hang at the beach, and women would come on in bikini bottoms, so thin you could see their hip bones sticking out..  *shudder*

I used to be that thin, too(I was sick for a long time). I used to think that was the way I wanted to look.  Today, people look at pictures of me when i was like that and say "Ugh....you look so sick....I like you better now....you look much healthier."  That's where I agree with you, Hairspray...there is a difference between being thin and healthy and being a stick figure.  (I like myself better now, too).

With all of the supermodels and actresses looking so thin, it's no wonder there are 1st graders with eating disorders.... :(

I agree, and not just because I am overweight myself.  I don't like the role models out there for my daughter.  I don't want her to think that appearance is all there is.  I don't mean that she shouldn't be healthy, but too skinny is ridiculous.  To go the other way, it looks horrible on a man, too.  I like men that have meat on their bones.  I like to feel safe with a guy, and I don't feel safe with a stick thin man.  It just isn't right.  I know that I am not his type, but I think Rock Hudson was it.  That is the body type I like...not exclusively but it is definately my favorite. ;D

These extremely thin women are not my type anyway.  I want my women to have a little meat on their bones.  I want women with something on the top and something on the bottom.  These extremely thin women are usually flat-chested and have no butt to speak of.  They turn me off.  Why would a woman do that, anyway?  What is she thinking?  She's not gonna get a man looking like a stick!

I also agree, lollipop ladies are gross, you want to take them out and force feed them!! Look at how scary Renee Zellwinger got after the Briget Jones movie and how good she looked in it! It is such an unhealthy image to show young girls. What about all these fad diets the 'stars ' are on I think alot of them will have major health problems as they get older.I too was too thin at one point,I'm 5ft 11" tall and looked dreadful though I didn't think so at the time, there is too much pressure to stay thin.I haven't stepped on a pair of scales in years and I don't intend to.I'm happy with where I'm at and him indoors has no complaints !!     :)

And, yet, I don't see anyone complaining about obese people. They are as disgusting, if not, even more than thin people - and there's far more of them too! Lazy, undisciplined, and judgmental (of us, fitter and better looking fellows). There's something to be said for the flapping flab when fat people jostle and wave or do anything physical (and it isn't good).

Heeeeeeeeeyyy!!!!!!!! That's for another thread!  >:(

JUST KIDDING!!!  ;)

Listen, I also do not think obesity is a good thing or healthy either. I don't think anyone does, for that matter. People who are obese know they have a problem and they either are able to do something about it or are not able to do anything about it. They live with that either way. The ones who are not able to do anything about it for genetic or medical reasons hopefully learn to love themselves just the way they are.

Now, thinness on the other hand, is thought of as a good thing by a good percentage of people. That's the issue here. The percenatge of them who are in control of it, dilute themselves into thinking it's absolutely fabulous to look like a bean pole. And most never love themselves. They can't be thin enough. Think Karen Carpenter.

Don't hold back, tell us what you really think!  ::)  I think it's fairly hilarious that you say obese people are judgmental of fitter, better looking fellows (like yourself, of course!).  Your modesty is overwhelming!  Just because you are in better shape physically by no means makes you any better looking.  If anything, an attitude like that takes away from your attractiveness.  People are people, not pounds.  Of course, this is just my opinion, and since I already know you don't agree, we'll just leave it at that, OK? :-X

EDIT:  I just wanna say, before the bashing begins, :p  Y'all know you'd like to have the cajones to say that.   ;D

TB,

I hate tell you this, but she's got a point. Not only that, but you just judged obese people. So, doesn't that make you judgmental? I don't want to upset you in any way, so please take this opinion of mine as a little bit of constructive criticism, not an insult.

What she said! LOL

I like Hairsprays statement....Now, thinness on the other hand, is thought of as a good thing...

A woman's body shoud be appreciated.  :-* for the guys here who do!

The media shows unhealthy images of woman that affect girls who, by no means outside of vomiting, get that thin!

TB does not get it because he is a boy and woman are not that sallow about men. If we were, you guys would all have an abundance of calluses on your hands! ;) LOL

All people a built different and if someone has a problem with how someone else looks, they need to turn their highly inappropriate, opinionated, shallow, waste of breath, ass away and try to improve what little bit of class they may have left! :)

**the above statement has to do with NO ONE here**

hey, I have PMS this week and I needed to vent.--hehe  :D

I remember as far back when they made jokes about Twiggy's dearth of girth. It didn't hurt her career. And women as far back as Lillian Gish have been grilled on their eating habits. I guess people never learn from Karen Carpenter's death. :(

I've heard from more than one news source that the average American woman is a size 14.  And I believe it.  I don't think there is anything wrong with a woman having some meat on her bones.  I also believe that it's healthier that way if she is to carry a child.  To me, rail-thin women look out of proportion.

What does size 14 mean? All I can think of, is that they're damn big shoes.

You guys are funny. I mean, what if I had added a bunch of little smiley faces and other icons? Then, you could really get the gist of my post. Gee-zus!

Actually, people who think in terms of weight (whether one is lambasting the fat or the thin) have bigger problems than weight (and THIS is not meant to be a sarcastic statement...). Why should one look up to entertainers and television for role-models anyway? Make one out yourself. Oh, but I forgot - as everyone is supposed to know. it is much harder to pass judgment upon yourself.

Good point, TB.  I prefer to look up to the "real heroes" as role models, anyway.

I like you TB. However, I must reply-

"You guys are funny. I mean, what if I had added a bunch of little smiley faces and other icons? Then, you could really get the gist of my post. Gee-zus!"

Sarcasm doesn't become you. It seems here that you became upset to some degree. This thread was not meant to affect you personally. I'm sure your lack of tact in your original reply prompted strong feelings in some and you're responding to that.

"Actually, people who think in terms of weight (whether one is lambasting the fat or the thin) have bigger problems than weight (and THIS is not meant to be a sarcastic statement...)."

I don't think in terms of weight and I have no problems. I simply chose to express an observation and my opinion in reference to it.

"Why should one look up to entertainers and television for role-models anyway?"

We "shouldn't" look up to entertainers and television for role-models. True. But that's not the point. The point is that it is a fact; whether we like it or not, whether we should or shouldn't, that people and especially teens do look up to entertainers and television for role-models. Therefore, what there should be is a healthy standard out there in the entertainment world. That's what I think.

"Make one out yourself."

That's easier said than done, especially for teens. Look at the millions of teens who flock out to see Britney Spears or NSYNC.

'Nuff said.

Alllrighty..

*stands on her soap box and whips her two cents out*

IMH(aac)O, ;)  ..Weight is an issue to the people who wear it, and to those who make others feel like they need to be the same to fit in (i.e. celebs, 'cause they do, intentionally or not..).  I think that role models do have a responsibility to give youth (yeah yeah, me... :P) some shoes to fill that they'll be healthy and happy (also alive, that's always good) in after the skinny trend disappears.  And it will.  And then there will be another dangerous fad for kids to avoid.  But there will still be the Drew Barrymores.. And there will always be those of us who couldn't care less about how we compare to Hollywood. :D

P.S. there's a hundred million things to say on this topic, but many of them have already been said, and I hate to be redundant.. hehe
