Subject: Goldmember.. Austin Powers sued

Written By: ChuckyG on 01/29/02 at 06:00 p.m.

might be old news by now, but the producers of Austin Powers are being sued by the MGM owners of James Bond, and got an injuction to prevent them from using the name Goldmember in the upcoming film.

disgusting if you ask me.. the right to parody needs better protection if the copyright owners get to have such strict control over their property..

This is just so stupid.  They can parody the character for two whole films, and yet one thing makes the studios balk.

Don't they realize that many people are reminded of the original by the parody?  ( and in the case of movies, may go out and buy or rent it)?

Apparently they don't....

well, with the last flicks, they did bully the studio into running trailers on their video releases for the originals.. they might be angling for a little more.. plus I'm sure no one expected the last flick to gross over 300 million.. pretty big numbers for any comedy film.. probably better numbers than the last Bond film even saw

Actually, this is the first time the character "Goldmember" has been seen in the AP movies. I agree, it is stupid...all this controversy these days... ;) :D ;) :-/

Why didn't the studio clamor about the Lotta V. reference in the first AP movie? It seems like they are a little too late to complain. ???

I would say 'the spy who shagged me' is a nearer parody than 'goldmember'!

Yeah, I was wondering about this while I was reading an article about movie releases yesterday.  Not sure what the source was (was running through Time, Newsweek, and a couple others looking for reviews on Attack of the Clones when I noticed that someone called the new Austin Power's movie by the Goldmember name.  Didn't know whether they'd finally acquired the rights or whether the article was just badly uninformed...

There is a rumor spreading that the new Austin Powers movie will be renamed "Never Say Member Again".  :D (LOL!)
New Line Pictures, the studio that makes AP, has said this is "only publicity" and is untrue.

I'm sure you're right...

But we missed a few:
Moonshagger
For your shags only (or should that be "For your member only"?)
Octomember
... but I'm b***ered if I know what they're going to do with "Casino Royale"

;-)

"I'm going to do him left-handed"  "If I use my right, it's over too quickly" :)  Thanks, for the compliment.  I knew if I rooted through the Monkey Island sites long enough that I could find one of Guybrush practicing. :)
