I'm letting "Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier collect dust on my coffee table right now.  I just can't get interested in it.  I've been trying to read it for months.  LOL  It usually takes me two days or less to read a book, but, alas, this one is boring me into stupidity....when I finish, I hope the follow up I bought, "Mrs. DeWinter", by some other author is better.....

I am currently reading The Cat Who Went Up Country.  I just finished the new Joan Hess Maggody and Moonbeams.  I also have a Dorothy Gilman that is next in line.  I have never read her, but my mom likes her.  At work I am listening to the book on tape Atlas Shrugged...long book.  I finally decided to read it because my mom got my name out of it and raves about it constantly.  It is good, just loooooong.

i'm in the midst of a very cheesy romance novel called 'private vows' from the harlequin intrigue line...they're supposed to be suspense/mystery, but mostly they're just fluff.  i usually try to read books with a little more substance, but sometimes i just want the cheese.  :D

I have a book in every room of the house, in various stages of being read.  That way, I can snatch a page or two whenever I have a minute.

For specifics:

"Queen Maker: A Novel of King David's Queen" by India Edgehill Similar in style to "The Red Tent" but by a different author.  For the first time in about three years, I finished the whole thing in one day.

"The Seven Daughters Of Eve: Science That Reveals Our Genetic Ancestry" by Bryan Sykes. Science written in an easy to understand way.  Short words and short sentences so even a dummy like me can understand it.  I'm enjoying it so far, and I can't wait to see which "daughter" I'm most likely decended from.

I also have the latest National Geographic on hand, one of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, and the fifth volume of Neil Gaiman's Sandman series.

I am eagerly awaiting publication of Jean Auel's newest book, "The Shelters Of Stone". I have pre-ordered it from my book club.  I also just ordered the latest from Elizabeth Peters.

I just finished reading a book called "Cold Zero: Inside the FBI Hostage Rescue Team" by Christopher Whitcomb.  It's basically about the authors first hand accounts of hostage situations and he talks about what went on during the Waco & Ruby Ridge events.   :P

As soon as I finish the 4th book I will pick up the new King of Torts by John Grisham, it looks good!

Thanks WL for reviving this thread, its a good one that can go on and on. Gives people a different perspective on available genres as well as a good review on the books that we read! :D

Ok, don't everyone run away screaming now....

I just picked up the Encyclopedia of Serial Killers by Michael Newton.  It's well-researched, and tells of serial killers that go back to the sixteenth century...it's a facinating read.

Also some ancient Egyptian murder Mysteries by Lynda S. Robinson:

Murder In The Place of Anibis
Murder At The God's Gate
Murder At The Feast Of Rejoicing
Eater Of Souls
  *and*
Drinker of Blood

These are great...well researched, well written... and full of detail.

"Thank you Jeeves" by PG Wodehouse
Brilliant. Very funny - but then most things by Wodehouse are...

On the Stephen King Dreamcatcher debate. Well, I tried reading that when it came out a year or so ago but gave up half way through. I used to be a big King fan. The early books such as The Shining, Pet Semetary, Firestarter and The Dead Zone were all somewhere between pretty good to very good. In recent years, though, he's written some stinkers. I really can't be bothered reading them any more....  :(

Oooh thats one to look out for.
I have True Crime Through History by Richard Glyn Jones - and its very similar in that its basically a chronological book on mass murderers and serial killers (all males) from UK, Europe, and USA from 1811 thru to Denis Nilsen in 1983.  I have been meaning to check to see if there is a more updated version that covers the rest of the 80s and 90's and could then include the many Aussies as well.  I have heard the author has compiled a similar book on women but have never tracked it down.
