Better:

You Better Run--Pat Benatar (original:  The Young Rascals)
When Will I Be Loved--Linda Ronstadt  (original:  The Everly Brothers; their version isn't that bad, it's just that Linda's version is better)

Worse:

Cathy's Clown--Reba McEntire  (original:  The Everly Brothers.)  Reba totally destroyed this song.
Last Kiss--Pearl Jam (best-known previous version although not the original:  J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers.  Written and originally recorded by Wayne Cochran, but his version is not that well-known.)  Eddie Vedder did this song an injustice.

I like the remake of "Crazy" (sung by the kidneythieves) better than the original (sung by Patsy Cline).

Travis sang "Baby One More Time" and it's fantastic.

UB40 did a really good rendition of Neil Diamond's "Red, Red Wine." Both versions I cannot do without.

Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" is a good cover of the old R&B hit by ? (I keep forgetting the name of this group!).

New Order did a live cover of The Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray," which IMHO, is better than the original (not big on Nico and Lou Reed anyway...).

Depeche Mode did a cover of Nat King Cole's "Route 66." It's DeMode, so you know it's excellent.

Martin L. Gore did 5 covers for his Counterfeit album. All masterpieces - especially "Compulsion" and "In A Manner Of Speaking."

Frente did an OK all-acoustic version of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle." The song pretty much lends itself to be great anyway if covered half-way right by any band.

Phew. I'll leave it at that.

How about these "to be commended" versions of songs that I know?

Mandy Barnett's Don't Forget To Cry is a cover of the Everly Brothers song, written by Bryant.

The Everly Brothers do a damn good job of trying to sing Englebert Humperdincks monstrosity of a recording of a song that goes by the name of Release Me.

(Replyed in order of comments :) )

I'll have to get hold of the Travis song!

I dislike Neil Diamond- probably beacuse my mom adores him! But, I do like UB40'S 'Red Red Wine' a lot.

The answer to your question is Gloria Jones. I absolutly love the original as much as the Soft Cell version - try and get a hold of it.

Of course, Gloria Jones, the answer to the most commonly asked trivia question in the history of popular music.

"These Boots are Made for Walkin' " by Nancy Sinatra/Crispin Glover(well at least Crispin Gover's version was funnier, if not weirder).

"Jerkin Back and Forth" by Devo/Jughead's Revenge(Jughead's Revenge had a better version, but it was on a Devo tribute CD so it's not like they were out to trash the original)

"Blue Monday" by New Order/Orgy(I recently decided I liked Orgy's cover much better).

"Police On My Back" by The Equals/The Clash(I can't decide).

"Spirits in the Material World" by The Police/Pato Banton and the Reggae Revolution(both have ther good points, but I think Pato Banton's is catchier. And even when you listen to the original, you get a sense of reggae influence in it.).

I had others, hopefully I'll add them here.

Doro's I had too much to dream - originally by The Electric Prunes

(dunno why I don't like the original - could be the band name  ::)  :P )

Better:
Hard To Handle
Originally by Otis Reading
Remake by The Black Crowes.  Although Hard to Handle is classic Otis, the Black Crowes rocked it up more and IMO made it better to listen to

That's Just The Way It Is or Changes
Original by ??
Cover by 2Pac.  I like 2Pac's version better because it seems to have more heart to it.

I'll Be Watching You or I'll Be Missing You
Original by Sting
Cover by Puff Daddy (name he went by at the time).  Once again, Puff Daddy's version has more heart to it because he was singing about one of his friends who was killed.  Notorious B.I.G I think it was.

With A Little Help From My Friends
Original by The Beatles
Cover by Joe Cocker.  The Beatles song is more just a pop song, definitely not one of their best, once again Joe Cocker gave it more heart and soul.

I can't think of any worse covers at the moment because the good ones are the only ones that really stick in my mind.
