Subject: Underappreciation

Written By: Phia on 05/13/02 at 11:14 p.m.

Movies, bands, books, CDs, authors, etc..

Who/what do you think has been underappreciated?

The Screaming Trees, the Throwing Muses (and the Breeders and Belly), the Eels *proudly points to her personal icon thingie*, Pavement, and the Manic Street Preachers are all incredible bands but I've never heard them play on the radio. The Screaming Trees are especially underappreciated. Why do all the other grunge bands get big and famous but they're left behind in the dust? They have Mark Lanegan for God's sake...  :D

Some people have read it, but I don't think The Liar's Club by Mary Karr gets all the credit it's due. It's an incredible book and it changed my life. Mary Karr's poetry is also often overlooked. She's probably my favorite poet. Her poems are beautiful and thought provoking.

I could name thousands that are overapreciated. I'd Have to agree with The Manic Street Preachers, at least in the US.  AS for modern artists I think David Grey, Travis, Geofrey Gaines, 7 stops 8,Five for fighting, and sister hazel. are underapreciated.  AS for mid 90's I'd say Local H,  and Del Amitri.  As for grundge Mudhonney Bairly gets any apreciation outside the northwest.  One of My favorite 80's bands is The Crazy Eights and no one has even heard of them.

I love the Manics. They're one of my favorite bands. Mudhoney is also great. You're right, that's another grunge band that isn't paid enough attention to. Everyone's too busy swooning over Kurt Cobain to notice them I guess. Travis seems like it got most of its fame from that humorous Britney Spears cover...which is a sad thing. I like them.

Here in the UK I hear the Manics on the radio every day.
Now, if you want to know some bands so under-rated you've probably never heard of them, how about Dustball, Spacemaid, Melaleuca (never heard any of them on the radio) or even Beach Buggy (rarely)

I hear Five For Fighting everyday to the point that I've come to loathe that guy's voice (not that I liked them when I first heard them...). Seriously, just come down to SoCal and listen to Star 98.7 or KBIG 104. They play their two singles on a loop, every hour on the hour.

As for underappreciated bands and artists. I wouldn't look further than the massive array of New Wave artists and bands. When was the last time anyone heard of Japan, Visage, Front 242, Cabaret Voltaire, and, heck, even Kraftwerk? Throw in Joy Division/New Order, which with the exception of DJMidas, nobody bothers to mention...

Well, in America almost no one has heard of them. I actually learned about them first from a British online friend. On our radio stations, they're playing so much Sum41 that they can't seem to fit the Manics and other great bands in :'(

Ugh, new rock...why in the good old days... ;)

Even though this isn't my type of music as much, there are many girl punk bands that are infinitely better than No Doubt but no one has heard of them.

The Pacers, the Federal government pee-ons, sanitation workers, teachers and school faculty. These I find very underappreciated. :(
As for music, Liz Phair, Joan Armatrading, Lenny Kravitz and John Hiatt are definitely on the low end of the totem pole.

Lenny Kravitz? Hmm, okay. I agree with Liz Phair though. Any female in rock who goes against the usual stereotypes usually isn't as popular.

If you judging Kravitz on his only "hit" 'Let Love Rule', you might have a point, Phia. But have you've checked him out lately? He has really matured since the sham marriage to Lisa Bonet. 8)

Agreed. Kravitz was one of the best artists of the '90s, IMO. I enjoy almost all of his hits, and his current material is a breath of fresh air among all the crap on the radio and video channels today. However, "Let Love Rule" is far from being his only true "hit". (In fact, it was actually one of his lesser ones!) Don't forget "It Ain't Over 'Til it's Over", "Are You Gonna Go My Way", "Believe", "Fly Away", his cover of "American Woman", etc. - all of those were pretty big hits for him... :-)

Agreed!! :)

I'd add Nurses, Moms, and Fathers who actually parent and get the same bad rap of those who don't.  ;)
Plus Firemen, Police Personnel, and Doctors. :)

As for musicians and writers....I don't really care.  :-/  Unless they want to give me some of their money....lol

I agree, BA. Especially housewives and house husbands who don't get paid and are doing twice the work of white-collar management.  ;) Also, people fighting overseas for our Armed Forces and those who do administrative work for our military overseas.  :) And lawyers who are actually defending "us" instead of sleazy clientele and who are ethical. It seems like the shysters get all the glory.  >:((Eg.:Johnnie Cochran, Alan Dershowitz, Robert Shapiro, etc.)
I noticed you omitted my Indiana Pacers from the original quote. Are you not a fan of the NBA? Or are you just not a Pacer fan? I do stand by my belief that the refs do not give Indiana any respect.  :(
